Phillies Try to Strengthen Bullpen With R. Hernandez

NEW ORLEANS (Dec. 15) -- The Philadelphia Phillies are leaving no stone unturned in their bullpen in 2004.

After adding All-Star closer Billy Wagner in a trade and signing talented right-hander Tim Worrell to set him up, the Phillies on Monday signed veteran right-hander Roberto Hernandez to a one-year contract worth $750,000.

The 39-year-old Hernandez spent the 2003 season in Atlanta, working as a setup man for closer John Smoltz. With the Phillies, he likely will be asked to pitch the sixth or seventh innings.

"We are pleased to have another quality arm for our bullpen," said Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. "He has had tremendous success on the back end of the bullpen, and will add to what we already consider a strength for our team."

Hernandez, a 13-year veteran, was 5-3 with a 4.35 ERA and 19 holds in 66 games for Atlanta in 2003. He has a career record of 53-54 with a 3.30 ERA and 320 saves in 400 opporiunities.

Hernandez broke in with the Chicago White Sox in 1991 and also has spent time with San Francisco, Tampa Bay and Kansas City.
