The Cubs today acquired catcher Michael Barrett from the Oakland Athletics for a player to be named later.

Oakland acquired Barrett in a trade with Montreal on Monday.

The 27-year-old Barrett has spent six seasons in the majors--all with the Expos. He has a career batting average of .253 with 38 homers and 193 RBIs. His career fielding percentage is .991 in 399 games.

Barrett hit .208 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in 2003, but spent much of the season on the disabled list after injuring his hip in July. While making a rehab appearance, he fractured his left index finger and didn't return until September 10.

The Expos selected Barrett with the 28th overall pick in the 1995 draft. He was originally drafted as a shortstop but was converted to a catcher. He had his best season in 2002, when he hit .263 with 12 homers, 49 RBIs and 20 doubles.

I couldnt come home to see "Cubs sign Pudge" in the headlines?
Or "Cubs Sign Lopez"?
Or "Cubs trade for Kendall"?
Or "Cubs trade for LoDuca"?
We couldnt have seen "Cubs trade for Pierzinski" a month ago?

It had to be frickin Michael Barrett! Goddamnit Jim! You and your strange effing infactuation with Michael Barrett! 5 of the top 6 catchers were on the market this offseason, and we got Michael Barrett. The kicker: Damian Miller and Michael Barrett will make a combined $5.5-6 million this season(at least, Barrett doesnt have a set contract yet.) How much will Javy likely get? $6 mil. And Pudge. Probly about $7 mil.

This makes me sick!:barf: :banghead

I sure as hell hope so Ray. No combination of Miller, Bako, and Barrett is appealing in the least bit.

The Trib is saying that if the Cubs and Barrett agree to a contract, Damian Miller will probably be the player going to Oakland.

Barrett could really be Damian Miller with a little bit more power(same defense, same average), but I still think they should have gone for a big name.

But I know Hendry was given a strict budget by the stingy Tribune company.:hmm:

I decided to add him to my sig just cuz I think he will be a slight improvement over Miller.

from what i understand, he's not bad at handling pitchers and is good defensively. and he certainly cant be any worse at the bat!

From everything that I have read about this trade was that Barrett was arbitration eligable. And the Cubs were going to send Miller to Oakland to complete the deal. And that they were not going to tender a contract to Barrett. Basically they are giving Miller and his 3 million a year away for nothing in return. In order to sign I-Rod. This would free up that previously mentioned 3 million to go towards that contract that Pudge wants. It makes good sense. Maybe too good. For who would want to give something up for Miller and his contract. But he could be a good fit for that young Oakland pitching staff.
If the cards fall like I have said here....there will be no excuses this year for our Cubbies. Barring injuries, it should be a great October in Chicago.
And on the Pudge deal, I am sure everyone heard about his friend Ozzie Guillen telling every member of the press that Pudge wants to go to the Cubs if they money is right. He has a desire to play for Dusty Baker and the fact that him and Guillen are friends and their children are equally as close. It would keep them all together for the summer. So who knows. But I wish they would hurry up. I can't stand seeing the best catchers in the game being dangled and Hendry not acting on it. Hendry has done a great job so far. So I don't think he will let us down now.
