This should give the bullpen some help, DeJean's been around for a while, has closed, served as primary setup, and been a mop-up guy ... He should prove to be a solid bridge to Jorge Julio.

Oh, and JJ signed with Detroit over the weekend ... So Bawlmer gained one and lost one ... To read more about JJ, Click Here (http://www.addictsports.com/baseball/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31332) or Click Here (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1696909)

O's ink reliever DeJean to 1-yr deal

BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday signed righthander Mike DeJean to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

DeJean was 5-8 with 19 saves and a 4.68 ERA in a career-high 76 games with the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals last season.

The 33-year-old DeJean is the third free agent signed by Baltimore this month, joining shortstop Miguel Tejada and catcher Javy Lopez.

Since breaking into the majors with the Colorado Rockies in 1997, DeJean has appeared in at least 54 games each season.

Primarily a middle reliever and set-up man in four years with Colorado and in his first season with Milwaukee, DeJean became the Brewers closer in 2002, converting 27 of 30 save opportunities.

DeJean had 18 saves with Milwaukee last season before being traded to St. Louis on August 22. He was used mostly in a set-up role in 18 games with the Cardinals.

I don't think anyone can get excited here. DeJean will play a nice setup role in Baltimore, but someone has to get the ball into the 7th or 8th. Man, I'm having trouble putting a starting 5 together over there. The last thing they needed was to lose another starter. Let's hope Sidney Ponson inks a deal back in Baltimore.

Okay. I'm a little disturbed by our pitching situation. Just a little disturbed. I'm not pleased with JJ going elsewhere. I just know he's going to shine this year, and this is going to come back and bite Beattagan in the ass.

So, I have to read up on this DeJean guy. I don't know much about him. I liked this:

DeJean became the Brewers closer in 2002, converting 27 of 30 save opportunities

..... but that was 2002.

I'm reserving opinion, but I'm not that thrilled.

Ok, I agree, signing Dejean doesn't give one the same warm, fuzzy feeling as adding Donnelly, Hasegawa or someone like that ... But despite some of DeJean's numbers, I still think he'll help that bullpen out:

YEAR . . . . IP . . . ERA . . WHIP
COL 97 . . . 67.2 . . 3.99. . 1.44
COL 98 . . . 74.1 . . 3.03. . 1.37
COL 99 . . . 61.0 . . 8.41. . 1.85
COL 00 . . . 53.1 . . 4.89. . 1.57
MIL 01 . . . 84.1 . . 2.77. . 1.35
MIL 02 . . . 75.0 . . 3.12. . 1.40
MIL/STL 03 . 82.7 . . 4.68. . 1.51
CAREER . . .498.3 . . 4.26. . 1.49

First off, throw DeJean a bone if for no other reason than he's spent practically his entire MLB career up to now pitching in Denver and for Bud Selig's team! :( Poor guy! And when you consder that about a quarter (I'm guessing here) of the innings he's pitched in his career have been in Coors Field, his numbers aren't too bad at all.

Now, two stats I don't like about DeJean are his age, 33 at the end of last season, and the fact that of the 54 homers he's given up his entire career, about half, 25 of 'em, have come the last two seasons ... On the other hand, that really makes his work early on in Denver all the more impressive.

I'm actually thinking he's the 7th-inning arm now, or maybe he starts out as the 8th-inning setup and "grooms" some younger arm to take his job ... He doesn't have really hard stuff, low 90s is probably the highest he hits ... But he's pretty smart and somehow manages to wiggle out of jams.

Good stuff.

I really didn't know anything about him. I like your thinking, Wills. :smokin:

Hate to say it Nanner, but letting JJ go didn't help the Orioles chances. I'd hate to see the O's turn out like the Rangers with a lot of offense and no pitching.

BOB! DON'T BRING ME DOWN, MAN!!!

:bash:

Geez. It's tough being an optimist around here.:eviltongu

Just let me live in my pink little bubble where the O's win the East with no pitching.

From what i've seen, DeJean would be a pretty solid setup guy for the O's, but I still agree that the rotation has to get sorted out. What I find unbelievable is that there's still talk of Vlad being an O this year, when there barely seems to be a starting staff.

Sorry, I forgot that in Nanner's world the O's have won the title 26 straight times and in 2003 will win the title averaging 11 runs per game. Team ERA will be 9.33, no one on the pitching staff will win get double digit wins, and the starting rotation lasts on average 4.2 innings! By the end of the O's 27th in a row championship run all of the pitchers' arms fall off! How's that?:fro: :nut: :rotf:
