Schmidt to join Phillies in Spring Training

Phillies Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt will be in uniform with the club during Spring Training as a special hitting instructor, Vice President and General Manager Ed Wade announced this morning.
Schmidt will wear #20.
"Larry Bowa spoke to Mike at the beginning of last season and told him that we would like to have him come to Spring Training and work with some of our hitters," Wade said. "I followed up with a formal invitation to Mike and he finalized his plans this week. Mike will assist [hitting coach] Greg Gross, and we think he'll be a big asset for us in Clearwater."
This will mark the first time Schmidt will officially be in uniform since retiring during the 1989 season. Schmidt, a four-time National League MVP, spent his entire 18-year career with the Phillies. His 548 home runs rank ninth on the all-time list. A 12-time All-Star at third base, Schmidt led the league in homers eight times and RBIs four times.
"We wanted to make sure that this wasn't just a public relations move," Wade continued. "And Mike and Larry have come up with a game plan designed to accomplish some things with our guys. Our players have heard a lot about Schmitty over the years, and now they'll get a chance to pick his brain."
Schmidt will be in the Philadelphia area tonight as he takes part in the Garry Maddox Celebrity Bowling event, presented by ShopRite of Berlin, at La Martinique Bowling Center at 501 South White Horse Pike in Stratford, NJ from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
