First time in the New Ballpark

PHILADELPHIA, PA - January 17, 2002 - Philadelphia Phillies Manager Larry Bowa and several Phillies players had the chance to step up to the plate earlier today for a special preview at the site of the Phillies New Ballpark, set to open in April 2004.

Bowa and Phillies' players Robert Person, Mike Lieberthal, Randy Wolf, Nelson Figueroa and Doug Glanville were treated to the first opportunity to step into the New Ballpark site and stand at home plate. All were excited about the progress of the New Ballpark and impressed with the clear view of the Philadelphia skyline -- which will be easily seen from the future home of the Phillies since the field will be recessed 23 feet.

Of course the players could not wait to play in their new home. In fact, Person, Wolf and Figueroa took turns tossing pitches right on site to Lieberthal, who just happened to have his glove on hand. Glanville, of course, also wanted to get in on the action. He picked up a bat, and stepped in to face the Phillies hurlers.

"I wanted to really hit that ball," said Glanville after looking at a few pitches. "But there was a lot of media around...and I didn't want anyone to get hurt."

"It's clear that we are truly looking forward to playing the first game in our new playground," said Larry Bowa, as he watched his players play ball on the New Ballpark site.

Sharon Swainson, Phillies Chief Communications Officer, is enthusiastic about the players' positive reaction to their New Ballpark preview. "It's great to see the Phillies players so excited about the New Ballpark. The anticipation level is very high as the ballpark project continues to move forward."
