ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Right-handed pitcher Paul Wilson agreed Friday to a $1.2 million, one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, avoiding arbitration.

Wilson went 8-9 with a 4.88 ERA in 37 games last season for Tampa Bay, setting career highs in wins, innings pitched (151 1-3) and strikeouts (119).

It marked his first full season at the major-league level since his rookie year of 1996 for the New York Mets. His 2.39 ERA after the All-Star break was fifth-best in the majors by pitchers working a minimum of 75 innings.

Wilson, 28, was the first overall pick in 1994 amateur draft. The Devil Rays acquired him from the Mets in a trade that also brought outfielder Jason Tyner to Tampa Bay for pitcher Rick White and outfielder Bubba Trammell.
