Mike Ericson was one of the six players originally signed by the Colorado Rockies in April 1991, two years before they played their first big-league game. Ericson, 34, never made it to the big leagues as a pitcher, retiring in 1994. He has had an impact on the organization, though, as the Rockies' area scout for Colorado, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. Last week, he was honored as the organization's 2001 Scout of the Year.

Danny Montgomery, 36, who has been on the Rockies scouting staff since November 1991, was honored as the seventh winner of the Hippauf Award, named in memory of Herb Hippauf, who died in 1995. The award is given annually to the Rockies scout who "displays loyalty, dedication, honesty and commitment" to the organization. Montomgery is the Rockies East Coast regional supervisor.

Joe Mikulik, who oversaw Class A Asheville's rebound from a 27-43 first half to win the South Atlantic League Southern Division title, will return for a third season as manager of the Tourists. Billy White will be the hitting coach for the fourth time in five seasons.

White managed the Rockies' short-season Class A Northwest League affiliate in 2000. Jim Bennett, pitching coach at short-season Class A Tri-City in 2001, will move up to the Asheville staff.

Jim Gideon, who managed Class AA Carolina the past two seasons, will move to Tri-City in 2002. Freddie Ocasio will return as the Tri-City hitting coach.

Stu Cole, who made his managerial debut at Tri-City in 2001, will manage Class A Salem, replacing Dave Collins, who was added to Milwaukee's big-league staff. Pitching coach Mike Arner moves up from Asheville to Salem. Javier Gonzalez will be the Salem hitting coach.

P.J. Carey will return as manager for the second year of existence of rookie-level Casper.

Chris Cron will return for a third season as the manager at Class AAA Colorado Springs, where Bob McClure, pitching coach at Class A Salem the past three seasons, will replace Jim Wright, who became the Rockies' big-league pitching coach.

Bryn Smith, who started the first home game in Rockies history in 1993, returns for a second season as pitching coach at Class AA Carolina. The Rockies have not finalized their manager at Carolina or the pitching coach at Tri-City.
