The Rockies are 22nd in The Sporting News' preseason rankings, two spots behind Los Angeles. These guys must be smokin' the good stuff to have eight teams below the Rox - oh, well... Arizona was the top-ranked National League West team, at fifth, with San Francisco 11th and San Diego 16th. The Sporting News believes the Rockies could be a sleeper (Zzzz). "With this kind of talent -- Hampton, Walker, Helton -- they should be better." The Yanks were ranked No. 1, followed by Atlanta, St. Louis and Seattle.

Notes:
Catcher Sal Fasano, who told the Rockies where to stuff a minor league contract, signed with Tampa Bay . . . Left-hander Scott Aldred, a member of the Rockies' original 25-man roster in 1993, signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers.
