The Rockies have depth on their big-league pitching staff and are adding insurance at the Class AAA level.
Barring a trade, the Rockies will go to spring training with seven legitimate candidates for their starting rotation, which will be built around left-handers Mike Hampton and Denny Neagle, and right-hander Shawn Chacon. The other candidates are John Thomson, Scott Elarton, Jason Jennings and Denny Stark.
They also have an excess of bullpen candidates. Along with right-handers Jose Jimenez, Justin Speier and Kane Davis, who return from last season, they have acquired right-hander Jose Paniagua, and left-handers Dennys Reyes and Brian Fuentes in trades, and signed free agents Rick White and Todd Jones.
Meanwhile, they re-signed Chris Nichting and Andy Larkin to minor league contracts, and have signed former big-league pitchers Chris Holt, Matt Whiteside and Carlos Almanzar to minor league contracts.
