The Rockies never have had a player to go to arbitration in the club's 10-year history. But O'Dowd cautioned: "We have never operated in these financial parameters before. Every $100,000, $200,000, $300,000 counts."

The team exchanged figures Friday with the remaining eligible players. Closer Jose Jimenez submitted for $2.275 million, well more than the Rockies' offer of $1.6 million. John Thomson proposed $1.6 million, with the team countering at $1 million. Talks with both have been encouraging. Meanwhile, negotiations with reliever Dennys Reyes - he is asking for $900,000 with the club coming in at $700,000 - are stalled.

The Rockies continue to add depth across the board. Over the past few days they have signed pitchers Carlos Almanzar, Chris Holt, Matt Whiteside, Chris Nichting and outfielder Cliff Brumbaugh to minor-league deals.
