PORT ST. LUCIE — The spring-training stadium that is home to the New Yorks Mets is getting a new name — Tradition Field.

The Mets announced today that Core Communities, one of the city's biggest developers, bought the naming rights for ballpark known as Thomas J. White Stadium.

Core is the developer of St. Lucie West and Tradition, a new residential-commercial development sprouting west of Interstate 95.

Mets officials said the new name salutes both Core's new community and the Met's "tradition" in Port St. Lucie.

Financial terms of the deal were not announced. The stadium, built in 1988 by White, is part of a county-owned sports facility that is also the site of minor-league baseball, festivals and shows.

PORT ST. LUCIE — The New York Mets announced Thursday their spring training stadium will be renamed Tradition Field, replacing the name of the man who built the stadium in the late 1980s.

Core Communities, one of the city’s largest developers, has purchased the naming rights for the ballpark formerly known as Thomas J. White Stadium. The financial terms were not disclosed. As part of a spring training contract reached last year with St. Lucie County, the Mets promised to find a sponsor that would pay at least $150,000 annually to emblazon its name on the county-owned facility.

Core is the developer of St. Lucie West and Tradition, a community of more than 7,000 homes being built west of Interstate 95 at Gatlin Boulevard.

County officials have said they plan to continue memorializing White at the stadium, perhaps naming a plaza at its entrance after the late developer.
