Mets outfielders involved in dispute with local residents

ASSOCIATED PRESS

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla., March 5 — New York Mets outfielders Karim Garcia and Shane Spencer were involved in a dispute with two local residents outside a restaurant near the team's spring training complex.
It was unclear exactly what happened, but general manager Jim Duquette said the club was aware of the confrontation Thursday night. No police report was filed.

''We don't think that it's anything we'd be concerned about and certainly we'll be handling it internally,'' Duquette said Friday. ''I can't get into the specifics because I don't know an awful lot about it.''
Duquette said he didn't anticipate charges being filed against any of the people involved.
''If there is any disciplinary action it will be handled internally,'' he said.
Garcia and former Yankees teammate Jeff Nelson were involved in a bullpen fight with a Boston Red Sox groundskeeper at Fenway Park during the AL championship series last October. Paul Williams Jr. has sued Nelson, now with the Texas Rangers, and Garcia for more than $33,000 for medical bills and lost wages.
Nelson, Garcia and Williams have pleaded innocent to assault and battery charges.
Garcia had a pinch-hit single in the second inning of Friday night's 10-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, but declined comment afterward.
Spencer said he hoped the dispute wouldn't affect his status with the team. He and Garcia are among at least four Mets competing for playing time in right field.
''I'm not supposed to say anything, but it got blown out (of proportion),'' Spencer said.
''It's just unfortunate.''

More problems for Mets
Club investigating incident in which Garcia and Spencer allegedly engaged in altercation with teens

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Mets outfielders Karim Garcia and Shane Spencer allegedly were involved in a drunken altercation with teenage boys outside a local pizzeria Thursday night, according to eyewitnesses, in a confrontation that began when Garcia was caught urinating in a parking lot.

The two former Yankees were not arrested and no charges have been filed, but that did not lessen the concern of the Mets. They were conducting their own investigation, which could be followed by disciplinary action against Garcia and Spencer. "We'll be looking at it internally," general manager Jim Duquette said.

As of late Friday night, the Mets were still gathering information about the incident, and Rob Kasdon, the club's vice president of security, was interviewing witnesses at Big Apple Pizza, a small Italian restaurant in a strip mall roughly three miles from Tradition Field.

The timing of Thursday's fracas could not be worse for Garcia, who already was waiting for a Boston judge to decide whether he will face misdemeanor assault charges for his role in the bullpen brawl that took place during Game 3 of the American League Championship Series Oct. 11 at Fenway Park. Garcia, along with former Yankees reliever Jeff Nelson, also is being sued by Fenway groundskeeper Paul Williams for more than $33,000 for lost wages and medical bills.

After playing two innings Friday night, Garcia said of Thursday's events: "I really don't have anything to say about it. Nothing at all."

When asked if he is worried about the implications of his ongoing legal matters, Garcia shook his head and said, "No." Spencer was not available for comment Friday.

As for Thursday's incident, two of the teenagers, Joshua Morrison, 17, and James Bellow, 17, described a drunken Garcia "stumbling" out of Duffy's, a sports bar adjacent to Big Apple Pizza, and then urinating directly in front of the pizzeria. Both referred to Garcia as obviously intoxicated, and Bellow, who was taking in the restaurant's furniture, was the first to notice Garcia urinating behind the passenger side door of his cream-colored Hummer.

"I yelled at him, 'Dude, you can't do that here,"' Bellow said. "Then he looked at me, he winked and says to me, 'You want to have some fun?' Then the manager came out and started yelling at him."

At that point, a woman with Garcia told him to get in the car, according to Bellow, and the two started to drive away along with Spencer and another female companion. But one of the pizzeria's deliverymen, Eric Fidal, 18, chased after the Hummer, which abruptly stopped. Both Garcia and Spencer jumped out, according to Bellow and Morrison, with Garcia immediately coming after Fidal with arms swinging.

Bellow and Morrison said Fidal was frozen as the charging players came toward him, then backpedaled into a bush as Garcia toppled onto him. Fidal was not available for comment Friday, but the two teenagers said he suffered some scratches from the clash with Garcia.

Police did not initially respond to the parking-lot skirmish, but eyewitnesses said the Hummer was pulled over at a Burger King down the road. Neither Garcia nor Spencer was driving the vehicle, according to the two teenagers, and it is unknown if any summonses were issued.

Friday's unveiling of the newly renovated Tradition Field was supposed to signify a new direction for the Mets, but less than an hour before the game's first pitch, Duquette stood in front of the refurbished clubhouse and announced that Garcia and Spencer had been involved in a "confrontation" with local residents the previous night outside a nearby pizzeria.

I would get rid of both ex-Skankees and go with a platoon of Prentice Redman and Jeff Duncan in rightfield.

On the radio broadcast of today's game both Gary Cohen and Ed Coleman were talking about the Mets possibly going with six outfielders, so if you go with both Prentice Redman and Jeff Duncan in right, Cliff Floyd in left and Mike Cameron in center, that leaves these three for the last two spots Roger Cedeno, Timo Perez, and Raul Gonzalez.

I don't want Redman on the Mets. I think Duncan is mainly centerfield but I don't think he is ever ready for majors yet. We need to get rid of three right fielders, Spencer, Garcia and Cedeno. I really wish Timo to be gone, too but I'd rather have Timo over Cedeno if I have to choose. I don't know what is the Mets' plan for that shakeup since Duke confirmed there may be shakeup. I hope he'll shake Spencer, Garcia and Cedeno loose.

Low-life trash! Damn, I can't stand that mental midget Garcia.

Too bad Pedro didn't have a little more zip on his fastball and knock him right up the side of the head when he had the chance.

I don't think it has a thing to do with from whence he came ... The Mexicans I've known over the years are well aware that peeing in public and bullying teenage boys trying to show off for your pizza ho' just isn't acceptable behavior ... And it can't be anything to do with wearing pinstripes previously ... Yogi Berra moved from the Yankees to the Mets, and you didn't see him getting into scrapes like this. ;)

Let's see, six teams in nine seasons, and he's been released three times since October 2000, and none of those moves had anything to do with economics..............Hmmmmm? Methinks Gustavo Karim Garcia is simply a - How do you say? - sphincter brain.

Karim Garcia is a waste of life. It's not enough that he sucks as a ballplayer, but he is a lousy human being. The world would be better off without him.

Yup, that sums it up! ;)

We really want to get rid of him and Spencer. I've just read the stories what was really happening. I'm kinda pissed at that pizza delivery boy for giving the bad stories to the police that wouldn't charge Garcia/Spencer for battery assault because of his greedy idea to slap them with a lawsuit. :sigh:

Associated Press

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- No charges will be filed against Karim Garcia and Shane Spencer in their parking-lot dispute with a local pizza deliveryman, police said Wednesday.

Eric Vidal, 20, had accused the New York Mets outfielders of kicking him last week. He filed a police report, and an investigation began into his allegation of misdemeanor simple battery.

The State Attorney's office told the Port St. Lucie criminal investigation division that, after reviewing the facts, there would be no charges.

Garcia and Spencer gave statements to police Tuesday at the Mets' spring training complex.

Garcia and Spencer both were fined by the Mets after the dispute last Thursday night. General manager Jim Duquette apologized to a representative of the Big Apple Pizza restaurant chain.

In his report, Vidal told two officers he wanted to pursue criminal charges against the two players because "that's the only way they'll be forced to pay" any medical bills he might incur.

Two officers took Vidal's report, and said they not observe and swelling or bruising. Sgt. Kevan Carmichael said he saw a small scratch on the ribcage, which Vidal said occurred when he fell into some shrubbery. Vidal did not let police take a photo of the scratch.

Vidal said the dispute began after he saw Garcia urinating outside the pizzeria. Vidal, who had been hired earlier in the week, said he was later spit on by one of the players, and that a verbal confrontation broke out.

Vidal claimed he tripped over a curb, and accused Garcia and Spencer of "hitting and kicking him about his body and head."

Garcia and Spencer were both signed during the offseason. The former Yankees outfielders are now competing for playing time in right.
