Fox Sports Net on Monday announced that Mario Impemba, 38, is the new play-by-play announcer for the network's coverage of Detroit Tigers baseball.
"I believe viewers will find Mario both fresh and familiar at the same time" said John Tuohey, Executive Producer at Fox Sports Net's Detroit-based regional network. "His play-by-play call is top-notch, plus he has the understanding and appreciation of the Tigers heritage."
Impemba, a Michigan native and Michigan State University Alumni, has spent the last seven seasons as the radio voice of the Anaheim Angels while also filling in as a television analyst for the last three seasons.
"I had two goals when I got into this business," Impemba said. "One was to broadcast big-league baseball, which I achieved with the Angels. The second was to do that in Detroit. I never thought the opportunity would present itself. That's what makes this so special."
The position opened up when Josh Lewin headed to Texas after four seasons with the Tigers to become the play-by-play voice for the Rangers and the NHL's Dallas Stars.
In addition to calling his boyhood team, Impemba looks forward to working with one of his idols, Tigers radio announcer Ernie Harwell, on a consistent basis.
"I always admired Ernie and Paul Carey," Impemba said. "I spent a lot of time [as a youth] listening to Major League Baseball broadcasts. Not only the Tigers, but many other teams as well. I would pull in St. Louis Cardinals broadcasts and listen to Jack Buck."
Impemba will join fellow Spartan Alumnus and former Tigers outfielder Kirk Gibson in the FSN booth for over 100 regular-season games this year.
"I had met Kirk in passing when the Angels and Tigers were playing," Impemba said. "I got to know him a little better at our audition and I think we are going to make a tremendous team. We're both guys who really love the game, and I'm really excited to work with him because his insight is second to none."
The duo will debut in the first of four Spring Training telecasts on March 5, 2002 when the Tigers take on the New York Yankees at 7:05 p.m. in Lakeland, Fla.
Impemba plans to relocate his wife, Cathy, and their two sons, Brett (8) and Daniel (5), from California to metro Detroit prior to the start of the Tigers' season.
"[Cathy] is from Iowa, and it gets just as cold there as in Michigan," Impemba said. "Thankfully, she's used to it, and excited to return to the Midwest."
