Well he is a veteren pitcher and an innings eater but is he what the D'Backs can rely on as the #3 or 4? Stottlemeyer may yet prove to be a better quality choice as reports are he is throwing better than he has in years. Young Anderson may finally be coming into form as well and may be a better #3 for the future at least until the days with the Unit and Schilling are gone.
Helling, hmmmm... Not great numbers but 30+ starts over 4 seasons. Well I guess they could have done worse.
I did read an interesting piece on the now record age of the D'Backs though. Seems the highest average oldest age of World Series winners (starting team on the field) was 31.8 years. The D'Backs were right there. With the changes they have made this season they are now at 33 years. That is way high. Helling isn't a pup either. In the short term I see him as helping but in the long run the overall age of the team has to be considered a negative. Once they start addressing the age issue the older less needed players are bound to be the ones gone first. Helling may fall right into that category and I wonder if that is why he only got a one year deal?
