View Full Version : A Question about the Brewers Infield?

So is there something I'm missing here? The Brew grew signs Young when they already are loaded with middle infielders??? I can understand the need for team speed and although Young can still run he isn't the base stealing threat that he was when he was much younger. These last couple of years he has been plagued with leg problems. Of course that may be resolved but from what I understand Belliard is a decent runner as well. If the problem is really gone Young most certainly fills the need for speed at the top of the order so Jenkins/Sexson have someone to drive around the bases. Weight may be Belliards real issue but how does one build for the future? By signing veterens like Young or developing your own talent ala Belliard? The Dodgers went the veteren route with Grissom, Goodwin last season and look where it got them. Not a good thing that is for sure.

Be that as it may, the Young deal is a done deal. Now what do they do? They most certainly won't carry six mids going into the season. Who gets dealt? I've heard Lorreta but wouldn't someone like the aging Hernandez be a better choice? I know Hernandez has a bit more pop which at first glance may seem appropriate to hold onto now that Burnitz is gone but that BA. Another guy swinging from his heals is not what the Brewers need IMHO. I say hold onto Young, Belliard and Loretta and deal Hernandez and any or all of the rest away in order to either pick up a servicable arm or a low dollar OF.

I see Young leading off followed by either Lorreta or Belliard and then bring on the lumber.

What do you think? :confused:

It seems there are no Brewers fans in the neighborhood, 'Fish! For a team that was just involved in a classic blockbuster trade, there seems to be no great interest. Won't someone local care enough to talk the team up off the mat? Spring training is almost upon us, Brewers addicts!!:confused:

Hi guys;

The thread I started here a week or so ago is gone, not sure what happened but be assured youre not the only Brewers fans...

As for the Young deal, I believe you're looking at a small market team trying to keep the turnstiles moving with some name recognition more than whats best for the team...Belliard has been a disappointment and rather faceless. He's shown up overweight and undermotivated the last couple years. Young does have speed and is a competitor, which is the sort of player Lopes likes. I agree with letting Hernandez go because he can get some real talent in return and the Brewers need to make more contact.
I liked the Burnitz move and I liked the Blanco deal alot. Securing some reliable bullpen help and only a slight dropoff in defense at catcher is a good trade. Raul Casanova has a better bat than Blanco and has looked good this spring so hopefully that will balance...
Curious about Izzy Alcantara.. Every day I'm seeing two or three hits in the boxscores with power. Is this Arizona thin air at work or does he have some real pop?
