BOSTON -- The Red Sox announced 18 non-roster invitees to 2002 Major League Spring Training Friday, and among them is Edgard Clemente, nephew of Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente.
A right-handed hitting outfielder, Clemente batted .247 with 12 home runs and 35 RBIs in 86 games with Triple-A Pawtucket while hitting .356 with three home runs and seven RBIs in 11 games with Double-A Trenton. The 26-year-old, who signed with the Red Sox April 16, 2001, played 46 games for Anaheim in 2000.
Damon Buford, who played for the Red Sox in 1998-99, is the only other non-roster outfielder invited to the club's big league camp.
Former Red Sox left-handers Butch Henry, 33, and Tim Young, 28, are among eight pitchers invited. Rolando Viera, the Cuban native drafted by the Sox in 2001, is the third and final lefty invited to camp Friday. Jamie Brewington, 30, is among five right-handers invited.
Three-time All-Star Carlos Baerga, 33, heads a list of five infielders vying for a spot on Boston's Major League roster. James Lofton, who saw action in seven games at shortstop for the Red Sox last September, was also among those invited to compete for an infield job.
Catchers Luis Rodriguez, Kelly Ramos and Steve Lomasney round out the non-roster players who will be at Red Sox Spring Training.
Red Sox pitchers and catchers report Feb. 15, with their workouts beginning Feb. 16 in Fort Myers, Fla. The report date for position players is Feb. 19. Full team workouts start Feb. 20.
