CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox signed minor-league free agent catcher Mark Dalesandro, infielder Justin Baughman (BOCK-man) and left-handed pitcher Mike Porzio to minor-league contracts and have invited them to spring training as non-roster players.
The White Sox also invited 11 others to spring training, giving the club 14 non-roster invitees: outfielder Joe Borchard, catcher Lee Evans, infielder Tim Hummel, pitchers Gary Majewski, Corwin Malone and Arnaldo Munoz, catcher Humberto Quintero, outfielder Julio Ramirez, pitcher Dennis Ulacia, outfielder Mario Valenzuela and pitcher Brian West.
White Sox pitchers and catchers undergo physicals and work out for the first time on Saturday, February 16 and position players on Thursday, February 21. The Sox open the Cactus League season with three consecutive games against the World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks, March 1-3 at Tucson Electric Park (TEP).
Four of the invitees have major-league experience. Ramirez, who made his first career Opening Day roster last season, combined to appear in 37 games with Florida (1999) and the White Sox (2001). Dalesandro, a Chicago native and former standout at the University of Illinois, has played in 79 games with California (1994-95), Toronto (1998-99) and the White Sox (2001). Baughman also appeared in 79 games with Anaheim (1998 and 2000). Porzio pitched in 16 games with Colorado (1999).
Borchard, the club's first-round draft pick in 2000, played for the Silver Medal-winning Team USA squad that participated in the XXXIV Baseball World Cup in Taiwan. The switch-hitting outfielder led Team USA in home runs (two) and walks (seven). The 6-5, 220-pounder was also listed by Baseball America as the No. 2 Outfielder among the Top 100 Prospects, No. 5 Prospect in the Southern League and the Best Batting Prospect in the SL.
Malone, 21, finished fourth among all minor league pitchers with a 1.98 ERA (37 ER/168.1 IP) and was listed as the No. 3 Prospect in the South Atlantic League by Baseball America. Ulacia, 20, combined to go 15-5 with a 2.84 ERA (57 ER/180.1 IP) in 29 starts at Class AAA Charlotte, Class AA Birmingham and Class A Winston-Salem and Kannapolis. West, a 6-4, 230-pounder, ranked ninth among Class A pitchers in IP (169.0). Evans, acquired from Pittsburgh with Todd Ritchie, tied for third among all Class AA minor-leaguers with eight triples.
