Kevin Mulligan | Switching allegiances for a good 'Coz'

THE TEMPLE University sweat shirt is coming off Bill Cosby, at least temporarily.

The Coz, America's most visible and famous Owl - and longtime Big 5 fan, we should note - is now a passenger on St. Joe's overcrowded bandwagon. Cosby, using his celebrity clout, commandeered a couple tickets for tonight's Sweet 16 action and has promised to return the favor to St. Joe's by proudly wearing a special university sweat shirt as he roots on the Hawks.

"I'm very proud of him for

doing that,'' said Temple coach John Chaney, not feeling slighted in the least. "I just hope and pray that he doesn't represent a bad-luck omen, like he did for me a few times.

"I would suggest that he should go up and say something nasty to Billy Packer. I'm going to tell him to tell Billy Packer that St. Joe's belongs and his [butt] should leave.''

Continental Airlines Arena, in East Rutherford, N.J., is a short limo hop through the Lincoln Tunnel for The Coz from his New York City digs.

"He's the only guy I know who has more free stuff than Chris DiJulia [athletic director's son]," said Hawks coach Phil Martelli. "Coz will shill with the best of them. No, seriously, it's great to have him in our corner.''

Cosby isn't the only mega celeb contacting the Hawks this week regarding tickets. Besides inquiring about having Jameer Nelson on his CBS show, David Letterman may also be in the house tonight in Hawks attire, we're told.

TNT's Charles Barkley, the former 76er, contacted Martelli Tuesday at the team's hotel

looking for tickets. Barkley has stayed in touch with Martelli this season, with their friendship dating back to Charles' days practicing with the 76ers at St. Joe's while Martelli was an assistant coach.

Sightings of the week

Comedian Chris Rock accommodated St. Joe's fans with a few pictures and autographs after stepping into the lobby of the Adam's Mark hotel in Buffalo last Friday for a weekend concert...Twins T.J. and Dave Voell posed for pictures and

reported another sighting at Niagara Falls: A little girl, about 10 years old, standing with her parents watching the Falls. Only she was flapping her wings like the Hawk. Priceless...Class move of the week: Texas Tech guard Mikey Marshall seeking out Martelli after St. Joe's victory to commend him and his team.

Another star Hoage

Ex-Eagles safety (1986-90) Terry Hoage and his courageous son, Chris, 15, are in town for the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Junior Tournament featuring the top 16 teams in the U.S. at St. Joe's, all day

Friday and Saturday.

Chris, afflicted with caudal

regression of the spine, plays for the Rancho Renegades, of Los Angeles. Terry flies Chris from their home in Pasa Robles, Calif., to LA twice a week for practice with the team.

Terry and wife Jennifer farm their 36-acre Hoage Vineyard, producing Syrah grapes.

"It is amazing and inspiring to see what wheelchair athletes can do,'' he said.

Now this is sick

It's bad enough people want chunks of cement at the imploded Veterans Stadium site. But somebody is actually trying to auction off packets of ketchup and mustard (saying they're from the Vet) on eBay. Sick.

Speaking of eBay, another loonie tune auctioned off a postcard of Convention Hall, touting it as "St. Joseph's Hawks arena'' without mentioning they haven't played there in decades. Someone actually paid $7.99 for it.

People chatter

Congrats to Phillies VP Larry Shenk, Catholic League umpiring legend Ed Kerrigan, former Roxborough High football/baseball coach Cliff Hubbard,, ex-Redskin John Pergine (Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and the other inductees into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (City All-Star Game chapter). The dinner is April 8 at Dugan's (215-766-9667 for tickets)...High-five also to Bobby Morgan (University of the

Sciences) on his induction this week into the NAIA Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Mo.

Morgan was 598-250 in 31 years as basketball coach at then-Philadelphia Pharmacy...Abington grad Jennifer Rhee, of Rydal,

became the first St. John's

University woman ever to score a hole-in-one in competition last weekend. She aced the 138-yard 16th at Reston (Va.) Country Club...Drum roll please, for my all-Big 5 first team: St. Joe's Jameer Nelson, Delonte West and Tyrone Barley (yes, a sixth man); Temple's David Hawkins; and Villanova's Curtis Sumpter edging teammate Mike Nardi. The Herb Good Basketball Club season-ending dinner is April 26 at Colleen's (215-898-4747 for tickets)...St. Joe's junior John Bryant has joined former Villanova star

Jason Lawson and ex-Hawk Rodney Blake (both asthmatic) in "Healthy Hoops,'' a Keystone Mercy program designed to help kids cope with asthma. Bryant suffered from childhood asthma...Prayers and thoughts go out to Drexel coach Bruiser Flint and his family on the loss of his dad, James Sr., one of the real good people in the Philly hoops community. He'll be missed.
