Phils, Tigers pitchers hit batters
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Aided by Ricky Ledee's power (homer, double), Vicente Padilla, the Phils' sharpest starter this spring, stood out for five innings. But he was hit hard in the sixth even before he hit Carlos Pena, who had singled and doubled. That came with two outs and loaded the bases, eliciting a warning to both sides from home-plate umpire Eric Cooper.
Padilla then gave up a three-run triple to Carlos Guillen to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead en route to their 5-1 win.
That apparently was not payback enough, as Detroit starter Nate Cornejo plunked Ledee. Both Cornejo and Tigers manager Alan Trammell got tossed.
Phillies manager Larry Bowa didn't address the incidents.
Bowa was more concerned about Cooper's overall performance: "The guy had a rough night behind the plate."
