Phillies sign Mabry to minor league deal

In a move made to potentially bolster their bench, the Phillies have reached an agreement with outfielder John Mabry on a Triple-A contract with an invitation to Spring Training.
"John's an experienced role player who can play a number of positions," said Phillies Vice President and General Manager Ed Wade who announced the signing on Monday afternoon. "He's got some power and his versatility is an asset. We'll put him in the mix to compete for one of our bench jobs in Spring Training."
Mabry, who turned 31 in October, started last season with St. Louis. He appeared in only five games for the Cardinals before being traded to the Florida Marlins for cash considerations. In limited playing time, Mabry hit a combined .208 with six home runs and 20 RBIs for the Cardinals and Marlins. He was, however, sidelined for over a month, April 15-May 20, with a right pectoral tear.
Wade continued, "John is excited about the chance to play in Philadelphia. He went to West Chester [University] and is a local guy, so this was an attractive opportunity for him."
The Phillies are looking to upgrade their bench after losing outfielder Brian Hunter to free agency. If Mabry makes the team out of Spring Training, his versatility and timely hitting would benefit the club greatly. During his seven-plus years of Major League service, Mabry has played first base, third base, the outfield and made two pitching appearances.
A career .271 hitter with 55 home runs, Mabry was originally selected by the Cardinals in the sixth round of the June, 1991 draft. Since making his Major League debut in 1994, he has played for St. Louis (1994-98, 2001), Seattle (1999-2000), San Diego (2000) and Florida (2001). During part of his stint in Seattle, current Phillies manager Larry Bowa was the third base coach.
