Rays invite six more to spring camp

ST. PETERSBURG, FL-- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Tom Martin, right-handed pitcher Randy Galvez, catchers Sal Fasano and Yamid Haad, infielder Andy Sheets and outfielder Emil Brown on minor league contracts with invitations to major league spring training, it was announced today.

Brown, 27, split last season between the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres, batting a combined .190 with 12 stolen bases (16 attempts) in a career-high 74 games. He also appeared in 22 games for the Padres' AAA club Portland and hit .321. He has appeared in 209 major league games with the Pirates and Padres over parts of the last five years.

Fasano, 30, played for three major league teams in 2001: Oakland, Kansas City and Colorado. He also appeared for Triple-A clubs Omaha and Colorado Springs. Hit a combined .200 in 39 games in his three major league stops, but finished the season batting .254 with three home runs and nine RBI in 25 games for the Rockies. He is a veteran of 252 big league games with the Royals, A's and Rockies and has 30 home runs and 95 RBI in 668 career at-bats.

Galvez, 23, split last season between the Pirates' Double-A affiliate Altoona and Mexico City of the Mexican League where he pitched on loan. He went a combined 9-8 with a 3.40 ERA in 23 starts. He owns a 48-28 record in 132 career minor league games (84 starts).

Haad, 24, played the majority of last season for Nashville (AAA) in the Pirates organization after early season stops at Altoona (AA) and Lynchburg (A). He batted .257 for Nashville in 51 games, his first action at the Triple-A level. He did appear in the major leagues in 1999 for Pittsburgh and made his lone appearance as a pinch-hitter.

Martin, 32, spent the 2001 season with the New York Mets organization, splitting the year between the Mets and AAA Norfolk. He went 1-0 with a 10.86 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the Mets and 2-1 with a save and a 6.26 ERA in 23 relief outings for Norfolk. He has appeared in 120 major league games (all relief) in all or parts of the last five seasons with the Astros, Indians and Mets. Lifetime he is 8-5 with a pair of saves and a 5.32 ERA. His best season was his rookie year in 1997 for Houston when he pitched in a career-high 55 games, posting a 5-3 record with two saves and a 2.09 ERA. He resides in Panama City Beach, Fla.

Sheets, 30, re-signs with the Devil Rays. He split the 2001 campaign between the Devil Rays and Durham (AAA). He hit .196 with a home run and 14 RBI in 49 games for the Rays, leading the team in sacrifice hits (7), and batted .280 for the Bulls in 66 games with four home runs, 22 RBI and eight stolen bases. He has appeared in 315 career major league games with the Mariners, Padres, Angels, Red Sox and Rays.
