Pitchers shift spots after Capuano's injury

To accommodate the strained left thigh suffered by left-hander Chris Capuano in his start Sunday in Houston, the Brewers have realigned their starting rotation for the week.

Right-hander Wes Obermueller, who pitched two innings in relief of Capuano against the Astros, will start Thursday against Arizona. Matt Kinney, who was in danger of losing his rotation spot before Capuano was injured, will go Friday against St. Louis.

The Brewers are hoping Capuano's injury will heal in time for him to pitch Saturday against the Cardinals, but that is a 50-50 proposition at best. The real test will come when he tries to throw a bullpen session on Thursday.

"We're taking it day by day right now," Capuano said. "If I feel anything at all on Thursday, I'll probably skip a start. I played catch today and it felt pretty good."

If Capuano is unable to pitch Saturday, the Brewers probably will pull a middle reliever out of the bullpen to face St. Louis. Because of off days, they don't need a fifth starter again for a couple of weeks, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to call up a pitcher from Class AAA Indianapolis, unless the bullpen is strapped.

Middle relievers Ben Ford, Dave Burba and Adrian Hernandez all have experience as starting pitchers.

"We won't take any chances (with Capuano)," manager Ned Yost said. "If he feels anything, we'll do something else."

Yost could have gone with Kinney on Wednesday but is trying to get him squared away after two horrible starts (81/3 innings, 12 hits, 13 runs). Kinney pitched well in his first start of the season in St. Louis (six innings, three runs) and Yost is hoping he'll repeat that performance.

"Those are better match-ups," Yost said. "We feel Matt matches up better against the Cardinals."

With off days today and Thursday, Yost has realigned his starting rotation for the next two series. Doug Davis and Matt Kinney will pitch Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, against Cincinnati.

Yost will come back with Sheets on Friday against Pittsburgh, with Wes Obermueller and Davis also going in that series.

Thanks to a pair of solid starts followed by Monday's day off, the Brewers entered their brief series against Cincinnati with a fully-armed bullpen.

The group was bolstered Sunday with the addition of right-hander Victor Santos, who was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis and will remain with the team at least until left-handed starter Chris Capuano comes off the disabled list May 4. Adrian Hernandez was available again Tuesday for the first time since his 82-pitch, five-inning performance in extra innings last Thursday.

If necessary, Yost also had the option of calling on starting pitcher Wes Obermueller, who is in a long stretch between starts because of the spate of off-days on the schedule. If Obermueller did not appear in Tuesday's game, Yost said he would throw a side session on Wednesday and be ready to start Saturday's game against the Pirates at Miller Park.

Speaking of struggling, Yost tabbed right-hander Adrian Hernandez to start Saturday's game against the Mets at Shea Stadium, completing the weekend list of probables.

Hernandez is 0-2 with a 10.03 ERA in five relief appearances. His best game was April 22, when Hernandez pitched five gritty innings against the Diamondbacks, only to surrender a pair of 15th-inning runs in a Brewers loss.

Besides that effort, which gained Hernandez some respect in the clubhouse, he has struggled. The Cuban defector has surrendered at least two earned runs in all of his appearances including April 28, when he allowed two of three inherited runners to score before allowing three more runs of his own, two earned.

"This is the land of opportunity," Yost quipped, admitting that Hernandez has already been given a number of opportunities. "He's about to get another one."

Yost will determine his starter for Saturday later this week, based on what happens with his bullpen in the next few days. Right-hander Matt Kinney, coming off a strong relief outing Saturday in New York, appears to be the leading candidate.

In an emergency, however, Yost could turn to Chris Capuano. The left-hander, who is coming back from a strained left thigh, made a rehabilitation start for Class A Beloit on Sunday and is scheduled to pitch for Indianapolis Saturday in Rochester.

"I'm not ruling it out. I'm not ruling it in," Yost said. "I'd rather have him make a rehab start. We'll see where we're at."
