CINCINNATI -- The recently demoted Jon Kitna signed a one-year contract extension with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday.

Kitna, who had his best NFL season as quarterback in 2003 before being demoted to backup last month, is now signed through 2005. Terms of the deal were not released.

Despite Kitna's performance, coach Marvin Lewis has decided to go with Carson Palmer, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft and former Heisman Trophy winner.

"I am looking forward to doing everything I can to make Carson's season go smoothly," Kitna said.

Lewis said he is happy to have Kitna remain, as both a seasoned backup and an upbeat influence on his teammates. Kitna is entering his eighth NFL season.

"This solidifies Jon's position with the Bengals and brings stability and depth to our quarterback situation," Lewis said.

Kitna, who play for Seattle before coming to Cincinnati, said he didn't want to move his family again. He'll now focus on helping Palmer with the challenges of being the team's starting quarterback.

"It'll be great if I don't have to play much," Kitna said. "But if I am called on to go in there, I'm working in a system where I've had success and with coaches I know and respect."

This is very shocking I think. Hey if he wants to stay that is great he is doing this but man I find it hard to believe that he wants to be a backup. If I knew I could play and help a team win there is no way I would want to be a backup I would want to be out there playing. But if this is what makes him happy then great more power to you and nice to see someone who looks like he does care more about his faimly than the money.
