Cubs invite Pat Mahomes to Spring Training

Chicago Cubs Media Relations Office

CHICAGO -- Looking to add a little depth and a little competition for the bullpen spots, the Cubs signed veteran hurler Pat Mahomes to a minor league deal and invited him to Spring Training camp as a non-roster invitee.

"We felt he's a veteran guy who would be good to bring into the mix to compete for a bullpen job," Cubs Vice President of Player Personnel Jim Hendry said. "He's had some success at the major league level and we are always looking for arms to shore up our relief corps."

At the age of 31, Mahomes has spent nine seasons in the big leagues with four different teams. Last season, the right-hander pitched for the Texas Rangers, going 7-6 with a 5.70 ERA in 56 games, four of them starts. In his 52 relief appearances, he posted a 4.58 ERA en route to leading American League relievers with 92 1/3 innings pitched.

Mahomes enjoyed his most success on the mound during his two-year stint with the New York Mets from 1999-2000. He went 13-3 over that time and saw action in four postseason games in 1999.

Mahomes also spent part of 1997 and all of 1998 playing in Japan with the Yokohama Bay Stars.

He will report to Fitch Park in Mesa, Ariz., with the rest of the pitchers and catchers on Feb. 16 for the start of Spring Training. With the addition of Mahomes' invitation, the Cubs will have 55 players in camp, including 15 non-roster invitees.
