EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Quarterback Kerry Collins was released by the New York Giants (news) on Wednesday, less than a week after the team traded for rookie Eli Manning.

Collins, who led the Giants to the 2001 Super Bowl, guaranteed the move by refusing to renegotiate his contact. He was to earn $7 million this season and count $8.95 million against the salary cap.

The release gives Collins time to find a new team for next season.

The Giants have said they will sign a veteran quarterback who might start the season to pave the way for Manning. The Mississippi quarterback was taken by the San Diego Chargers (news) with the first overall pick in the draft and shipped to New York.

"Kerry Collins played his heart out for the Giants and took us to the Super Bowl," general manager Ernie Accorsi said.

"Unfortunately, the economics of the system we work in today determine these most difficult decisions," Accorsi added.

Collins revived a career beset by troubles on and off the field after signing with the Giants in 1999. He became the starter halfway through that season, then led New York to its third Super Bowl the following season.

The Giants also made the playoffs in 2002.

Collins is second on the team's career list with 1,447 completions, trailing only Phil Simms. He is third in pass attempts (2,473) and passing yards (16,875), behind only Simms and Charlie Conerly in both categories. Collins' 81 TD passes rank fifth on the Giants' career list.

Guru I see the G men not being very good this year again and see them lossing a top 5 draft pick for the trade they made this year. I would have let this thing play out more with Manning and I think the could have got him cheaper than a first this year and next year for him.

They stunk last year as well....

And it wasnt Collins fault... Their OL stunk!!

Ray, not so sure they are gona throw Eli in the mix right away to get killed... They are looking to sign a vet QB..

Neil O'Donnell has been talked about....

Fact is, barring a miracle, this is going to be a tough year for Giants fans (again):sigh:

Ya I find it kind of funny the reason Manning didnt want to go to the Chargers was there O-Line sucked and I thought it funny that they was picking a team that has a O-line problem there to.

But I think I made my point clear on Manning but giving up next year what I feel like is a top 5 draft pick will be a tough thing to sit by and watch teams that was better than the G-men get to pick before them.

Ravens said they dont have the cap room, but that would be a nice fit there. I am hearing the Bears, Cowboys might be a long shot, or even the 49ers have been said as a team.

probably Ravens with Fassel as an assistant/special instructor with the team.

i think the 9ers will pick up Collins cuz we all know that Tim Rattay hasent proved that he is the man yet in 9ers land.

Ya but dont hold this season as the true Rattay. He has no proven WR also.

Not Really stupid at all guys. Collins was scheduled to make 8 million this year. Big dent in the Giants salary Cap. Releasing him and freeing up 8 million is a wise move,There is a lot of free agent QB's out there
