View Full Version : Managers
This is a good one ...
What is the most consecutive years that a franchise changed managers? Obviously you'll need to know the team and years, but name the managers and when they managed and you get a gold star.

Not sure if this is the correct answer or not but my guess is the Yankees with 9 consecutive years with a managerial change..
Here are the years and managers:
78-Martin
79-Lemon
80-Howser
81-Michael
82-Lemon
83-Martin
84-Berra
85-Martin
86-Pinella
Not sure if this is the right answer but it sure is ridiculous.....
I didn't even include some other managers in between:hmm:
Believe it or not, the number is even higher!
Hint: it is a post WWII record

That last answer is good enough for me. Heck I thought the Cardinals changed a lot when they went around with Red then Whitey but maybe it was just a color fixation or something like that. I would have thought that with as many times as Georgie dumped Billie Martin that was surely the answer but that A's run is impressive. Gone are the days of having two managers cover 4 decades ala Alston and Lasorda. Whatever the answer is I'm not so certain that it isn't a record that will be broken time and again in the modern era.:ohno:
Kudos to HMatsui:beer:
Under the reign (of terror) of owner Charles O. Finley, the A's went through managers the was a slugger goes through bats.

Follow up ...
Best that I can tell, there are two teams with five. The Cardinals had five managers in one season three different times.
1896: Harry Diddlebock, Arlie Latham, Chris Vonderahe, Roger Connor, and Tommy Dowd.
1892: Jack Glasscock, Jack Crooks, Cub Stricker, George Gore, and Bob Caruthers.
1893: Tommy McCarthy, John Kerins, Chief Roseman, Count Campau, and Joe Gerhardt.
Pittsburgh is the second team.
1884: Denny McKnight, Bob Ferguson, Joe Battin, George Creamer, and Horace Phillips.
Does anyone know why in the heck a team would have five managers the same season? A lot of teams have had three managers post 1950. That's also odd to me at least.

well josh.. in those days, leagues had absolutely no stability whatsoever. Guys would jump ship from team to team in midseason. A lot of the managers in those days were also players, so if a player who happened to be a manager jumped ship to another team in mid-season, they would need a new manager.
SO basically, this question really would only apply to the modern era...
