World Champion Diamondbacks set to televise 146 games in 2002
azdiamondbacks.com
PHOENIX -- The World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks will bring a minimum of 146 of their 162 regular season games to their fans via television during the 2002 season, Diamondbacks Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Scott Brubaker announced today.
It is a record amount of telecasts for the Diamondbacks, eclipsing the previous mark of 144 games set during the 2000 season.
The 146 games is a combined total of scheduled appearances on over-the-air flagship 3TV (75 games), cable flagship Fox Sports Net (60 games), nine appearances on the FOX Network's Saturday Game of the Week, and two confirmed appearances on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball package. Two additional Sunday games could be added by ESPN, with the games currently listed as optional telecasts by the cable network. The nine FOX telecasts are the maximum allowable amount of appearances for a team under the network's contract with Major League Baseball.
"We feel our schedule will be appealing to our many fans across the state," says Brubaker. "For the first time in our history, all 81 road games are currently set to be televised. Our success on the field has translated into more appearances on Major League Baseball's network and cable packages, which means more overall games on television. Our fans are the real winners with this schedule."
Thom Brennaman and Greg Schulte return for their fifth seasons as the Diamondbacks' play-by-play announcers. Brennaman will handle Diamondbacks' telecasts, and Schulte will describe the action on the Diamondbacks Radio Network, originating on KTAR Radio (620 AM) in Phoenix.
Popular analysts Jim Traber and Rod Allen also return to the broadcasts this season. Traber, in his second year on the broadcast team, will serve as the analyst for games televised on 3TV, while Allen, in his fifth season, will serve as analyst on Fox Sports Net. When not working on television, Traber and Allen will be heard on Diamondbacks' radio broadcasts.
Hall of Fame broadcaster Joe Garagiola Sr. returns for his fifth season as a fill-in analyst on television, and Jeff Munn returns for his second season as fill-in play-by-play announcer on radio. Garagiola will work selected games throughout the season. Munn will work games when Brennaman is away handling assignments for the FOX Network's Saturday Game of the Week package, with Schulte moving into the television play-by-play role.
For the second consecutive season, Diamondbacks radio broadcasts in Spanish will be heard on KSUN Radio (1400 AM), with all 81 home games and 27 selected road games to be aired. Miguel Quintana returns for his fifth season as play-by-play announcer, with Oscar Soria returning for his third season as analyst. Soria will also serve as analyst for 31 home games set for telecast on ¡MAS!, the Spanish-language information service of Cox Communications, operated by 3TV. Soria will be joined by ¡MAS! play-by-play announcer Freddy Morales, who returns for his second season in the booth.
The 27 road radio and 31 home television games set for Spanish-language broadcast will be selected at a later date.
Each radio broadcast is preceded by a 30-minute pre-game show, and a similar 30-minute pre-game can be found prior to Fox Sports Net telecasts. In addition, 3TV will once again air the Emmy award-winning "D-Backs, Playin' Hardball", hosted by Brennaman, on Sunday afternoons.
In addition to the regular season schedule, the Diamondbacks plan to broadcast 11 spring training games, beginning with the Cactus League opener Friday, March 1 against the Chicago White Sox at Tucson Electric Park. In addition, three spring games are currently set for telecast on Fox Sports Net, beginning with the Satruday, March 16th game at Tucson Electric Park against the Colorado Rockies.
The Diamondbacks have a schedule hotline for information at (602) 462-6015.
