View Full Version : Fantasy Football 101
Hey, this might not be new strategy but it's the way you win championships.
Unless your league's scoring is very skewed from the norm - Whether it's an auction or a draft, Running Backs should be your number one priority. Get two of them, either as your 1 and 2 picks or spend the money in an auction.
QB and WR can wait. Don't feel you should grab one just because someone else did. Other than a couple top players, they just don't measure up to what a great pair of stud running backs can do for your team.
With so many teams going to running back by committee, those stud RB who can score 15 TD's and run for 1400 yards are the rarest commodity in fantasy football. Grab 2, you'll be pleased with the results.

In the 2002 season in the Addicts league, I had LaDanian Tomlinson, Ricky Williams and Deuce McAllister. That got me to the championship.
Now in the 4 of the 5 leagues I have played in my two years of experience, I have made the championship. (The won that didnt win was an auto draft) And I am all for picking top RB's. I always make sure Tomlinson my number 1 priority since hes my favourite player but I know he will produce. That's just me though, I agree with your strategy for sure TC
Part two - Don't take a kicker until the end of the draft/auction. There are a ton of 100 point K. The difference between the top and the bottom might look like a lot, but think about it. Over 16 games, what is the differnce between 125 points and 101, a little over a point a game. That's not worth losing a shot at a productive position player over. Plus there is always a kicker or two who come from out of the blue to have a good season, so you can make a pickup if you need to.

Ah good a thread for me.....
I dont know why I cant but I cant play and be good at Fantasy sports. I would always draft RB's and I would load up on them also. And it seems that they all get hurt and I am screwed. Or when they have a good week the guy I am playing will have a record setting week.
I just got sick of it and so I now quit....
Going back to the "grab two RB" topic. There is another reason to jump on the RB's early. There aren't very many true studs at RB.
A lot of owners go into the draft/auction figuring, I'll grab 1 QB - 1 RB - 1WR - with my first three choices, then I'll grab that second RB. Well, if you grab two stud RB's with your first two picks, you've taken two very big pieces out of the player pool. By the time your opposition realizes the talent is getting thin, he'll either have to pay big $$ (auction) for the remaining stud or have to grab the best of what's left, maybe a Tiki Barber.

This is GREAT info:thumbsup:
Thanks, James!
WR is a crap shoot. Do you want the second, or even third, reciever on a good throwing offense of the #1 guy in a bad offense? Take a long look at the stats. If an offensive team only throws for 2500 yards and 18 TD's, see if the QB spreads the ball around or zeros in on one reciever. If he spreads the ball, stay away. Now if the offense throws for 4000+ yds and 35+ TDs, then you'll find that even if the top guy catches 12+, there are still 23 or so TDs to be had. That makes the #2 and #3 very valuable.
Guess what, chances are those guys are overlooked by a lot of owners until the #1's are all gone. Another reason to key on starting RB's early and grab a very nice stable of WR in the middle rounds.

I've been keeping a close eye on the mock drafts/auctions that the different sites and magazines are having.
The early run on running backs can get borderline ridiculous — I’m a firm believer that RB depth is at a premium in fantasy football, and therefore you should make the position a primary focus. Keeping that in mind, some owners tend to go a bit overboard in the rush for rushers. In a recent 14-team CBS SportsLine “experts” draft, the first 11 picks and 18 of the first 19 were running backs. That, my friends, is crazy. The larger the league, the more people will scramble early for running backs. People have bypassed the likes of Marvin Harrison, Torry Holt, Peyton Manning, Michael Vick and Daunte Culpepper for Domanick Davis, Corey Dillon, Travis Henry and Tiki Barber.
Would you do the same? Not if you're planning on winning

Some other observations:
Randy Moss will be the first non-running back taken. Bet on it.
Peyton Manning is not the consensus No. 1 quarterback - I’ve seen Culpepper go first off the board as many times as Manning, and even Vick has snuck in there a few times.
Owners are concerned about Jamal Lewis and his pending legal woes. Same goes for Jeremy Shockey and his foot, as well as Marshall Faulk and the mileage his knee has on it. If you draft Faulk, make sure to take Steven Jackson later.
Who’s deserving of the second overall pick?
LaDainian Tomlinson is the only name I’ve seen in the No. 2 slot thus far. No Clinton Portis, no Ahman Green, just L.T.

I have my first draft on Sunday, I'm going to do my best to grab Tomlinson, and then get another RB shortly after
