Second baseman Luis Rivas became the latest addition to an overcrowded sick bay when his sore groin forced the club to place him on the 15-day DL after Saturday's 9-1 win over Chicago. Rivas has been out of the starting lineup four-straight games.

That man will be outfielder and prospect Michael Restovich, who was recalled from Triple-A Rochester.
Rivas is the sixth Twins player currently on the DL (the ninth this season), joining him with Shannon Stewart, Corey Koskie, Nick Punto, Joe Mauer and Joe Mays (who's on the 60-day).

With first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz still day-to-day with a back injury, Morneau started Friday's game at first and batted seventh against Chicago lefty Mark Buehrle. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Morneau would play regularly as the DH when Mientkiewicz returned to action.

Stewart has MRI: An MRI on Stewart's injured right foot revealed a 25-percent tear of the plantar fascia tissue. Although it's considered a very small tear, the 30-year-old might need to wear a protective boot for 7-10 days.
"At least they know what it is," Stewart said. "I didn't think (the MRI) would show anything, so I'm glad I went."
Also diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the tissue, not much can be done to speed the healing process other than rest. That means Stewart will have to try to stay in shape without swinging a bat or running for the next several days.
"I've never had an injury where I'm limited," Stewart said. "I don't know what to do."

Mauer update: Joe Mauer caught five innings and went 3-for-4 Friday during an extended Spring Training game at Fort Myers, Fla.
Mauer's schedule has him off Saturday, catching seven innings Sunday, playing Monday as the DH and catching a full nine innings Tuesday. If all goes well, an official minor league rehabilitation assignment could begin at Triple-A.
The club believes Mauer could be return from the DL on June 1, when it begins a homestand against Tampa Bay.

Steam room: As if there wasn't enough to worry about in the Twins clubhouse, imagine everyone's surprise when a Metrodome water pipe burst inside the ceiling of equipment manager Jim Dunn's office.
As hot and steamy water sprayed from above and flooded the room, stacks of towels were piled up at the doorway to prevent it from getting into the locker area.

Still feeling soreness from a strained oblique muscle in his rib cage, injured utility infielder Nick Punto went for a magnetic resonance imaging test Tuesday to see if there was something else causing his pain. The MRI came back negative.
Punto has been out of action since May 9 and is on the DL.
"Sometimes they heal fast and sometimes it's slow," Punto said. "Unfortunately, I got the slow one. I wake up every day hoping it feels a little better."

Before Tuesday's game with the Mets, the Twins activated second baseman Luis Rivas from the disabled list.
Rivas, who missed 14 games with a right groin strain, played the third of three games of a minor league rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Rochester Monday and went 1-for-4 before getting the green light to return.
"I'm ready to go. That's very important," Rivas said. "I'll go 100 percent. It's fine, no problem."
Utility infielder Alex Prieto was optioned to Rochester to make room for Rivas on the 25-man roster. Prieto batted .250 with one homer and three RBIs in 14 games with Minnesota. His departure means Rivas will be the backup shortstop if anything should happen to Cristian Guzman.

LF Shannon Stewart, who was allowed to remove the protective boot from his injured foot last week, has completed light workouts on a treadmill the past two days and swung the bat. He said Wednesday that doctors have told him that he might be well enough to return from the DL in about 10 days if he has no setbacks.

INF Nick Punto was placed on the 15-day DL because of a strained oblique muscle May 9 and has progressed little since then. RHP Joe Mays underwent Tommy John surgery Sept. 11, is on the 60-day DL and after a minor setback, with soreness in the forearm, has had a rehab assignment pushed back to late June. LF Shannon Stewart (foot) was placed on the 15-day DL because of a tendon tear in his foot and likely will be out until late June.

OF Shannon Stewart is expected to remain sidelined at least until the end of June, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported June 8. Stewart has been on the disabled list since May 20 with a torn tendon in his foot. "He's a very important piece, and might be the most important piece of the puzzle if it comes down to if we win," hitting coach Scott Ullger, talking about the AL Central race, told the newspaper. Minnesota is 9-15 without Stewart.

LF Shannon Stewart, on the disabled list with a foot injury, began jogging over the weekend, an encouraging step in his progress toward a possible return by early July. Once Stewart is able to sprint and cut around the bases without hurting the foot, Gardenhire plans to discuss a possible minor-league rehabilitation assignment with his leadoff hitter. The medical staff remains reluctant to project a timetable for Stewart's return from the often tricky plantar fasciitis injury. He has been sidelined more than a month.

INF Nick Punto was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained oblique May 9 and has had two setbacks during rehab work since then, including a twinge while swinging off soft-tosses last week. He's taking a very slow and cautious approach as he continues to work up to full speed batting practice. RHP Joe Mays underwent Tommy John surgery Sept. 11, is on the 60-day DL. After a setback, with soreness in the forearm, he has had a rehab assignment pushed back to probably late June or July. LF Shannon Stewart (foot) was placed on the 15-day DL with a tendon tear in his foot May 18 and has progressed to the final stages of his rehab work. He's traveling with the team this week and could be back sometime near the first of July.

The Pioneer Press reports that Joe Mauer likely will be put back on the DL after his surgically repaired knee is examined today. "It doesn't look good," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He's not improving. We thought that after three or four days he was going to be OK, but that's obviously not the case."

Minnesota is continuing its cautious approach with the 21-year-old, whose surgically repaired knee has inflammation and swelling. Although he can pinch-hit, it's questionable that Mauer will catch during the rest of the road trip.
Unfortunately for the club, Mauer isn't the only catcher that's banged up. Matthew LeCroy also has a sore knee while Henry Blanco has knee tendinitis to go with a sore shoulder and stiff neck.
"They're beat up," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We are a little thin in the catching department right now. But we'll work our way through it."
LeCroy caught Friday for the first time since June 10 and felt the effects. He was rested Saturday while Blanco worked behind the plate against Kansas City.

Gardenhire was struck in the leg by a Michael Cuddyer line drive during batting practice Saturday. Joe Mauer was fielding grounders in front of the manager at third base. When Cuddyer's sharp hit came their way, the rookie pulled his glove back at the last second.
A sheepish Mauer later tried to apologize.
