Good call rockin500. A guy you don't hear mentioned much in these type of discussions because his career was cut way too short because of knee injuries--Gale Sayers.

When he was healthy and in his prime, I've never seen anyone who was better. His career stats aren't going to stack up against some of the other great backs because of his brief career and the fact he played on some pretty bad Bears teams. But watching this guy play was a treat. He had moves that would literally take your breath away. And besides being an awesome running back, he also returned kick offs and punts. And because of his dazzling moves was spectacular at that phase of the game as well as running the ball from scrimmage. He was also a dangerous reciever coming out of the back field. Definetly the complete package.

He may not have been the greatest career wise, but for the brief time that we had the pleasure to watch him play, nobody could ever match the greatness of the "Kansas Comet."

I would go with Payton, Emmit and Barry. The future greats (that our kids would be talking about) would be Holmes (my favorite RB of all time) and Portis.

I am just shocked that only one has said Brown!!!!

It has to be Brown... He put up the stats that everyone was chasing... He also quit early for those people that dont remember and if he put in 4 more years which I feel he could have then everyone still would be chasing his records.... He was the full package for a RB...

And then Payton is second and I loved Payton but no one is close to Brown....

i don't know much about football history, having only started following the sport 4 years ago. But it's always tough to choose between players such as Jim Brown, Emmit Smith, and Walter payton. They were all great, and all different in their own ways. I think it's too tough a choice to make.

Very tough choice:

1. Walter Payton
2. Gale Sayers
3. Jim Brown
4. Barry Sanders

If Barry Sanders didnt cut his career short, his stats would be amazing!
For Emmitt Smith, he has an advantage, big O-linemen doing the job for him so I don't really see him as one of the greatest running back of all.

I'll go with Walter Payton form the sole reason that early in his career,he had no protection on the offensive line and had to be really creative.

I'll take Barry Sanders 2nd.

Priest could never make that list, IMO, because of how old he was when he first became a great RB and how long he wasn't good.

I'll say:

1. Barry Sanders
2. Walter Payton
3. Jim Brown
