Jose Reyes was scratched from his minor league rehab start with Single-A St. Lucie on Tuesday because of a sore lower back, according to the AP. He has been out with a strained hamstring and just returned to action on Friday. The Mets said his hamstring is fine, and his back will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.

At least it's nice to see Tim Teufel a lot! He's been all over the sports shows being interviewed about Reyes.

NEW YORK -- The latest setback suffered by Jose Reyes likely eliminates any chance of his rejoining the team this weekend in Miami.

While Reyes' back pain has put a crimp in his rehabilitation schedule, the good news is that his right hamstring is feeling fine. The St. Lucie Mets, with whom Reyes was doing his rehab work, were in Clearwater Wednesday night, but Reyes went back to Port St. Lucie to rest and get treatment on his aching lower back.

New York general manager Jim Duquette said that Reyes would not play Thursday and if he plays at all on Friday, it would be on a rehab assignment and not for the Mets against the Marlins. Reyes began to feel some slight soreness in his back about a week ago as a result of the work he's done with Toronto-based chiropractor Mark Lindsay to strengthen his hamstring.

"Reyes is not capable of playing right now because of the soreness in his back," Duquette said. "It's getting better, but he's not 100 percent. So, we backed off and sent him back to Port St. Lucie. We'll see how he feels tomorrow -- but it's not likely he'll play tomorrow, either.

"We're taking it for what it is. There's not a frustration level there. The trainers said not to be surprised if he starts experiencing soreness in his lower back as a result of adjusting the way he runs. With treatment he was able to play but after Sunday's game he felt enough soreness to prevent him from playing."

The soreness is expected to subside as Reyes' body adjusts to his new running style. His return next week when the Mets are in Philadelphia or when the club returns to Shea Stadium is more likely now.

"Hopefully Reyes is only a temporary thing," manager Art Howe said. "He's, in a word, exciting. Just remember what he did for us last year. He has an energy about him, an energy for the game. "Hopefully he'll be ready to compete offensively. Let's face it. He missed Spring Training and all of this season so far. Maybe it's unfair because we have to give him an opportunity to see where he is. If he's even close to where he was last year, he's going to make us better."
