Now I Know What It's Like
(to the tune of "Behind Blue Eyes")

Now I know what it's like
To be the fifth wheel, to get a raw deal
And be ridin' pine.
Now I know what it's like
To feel defeated, to be unneeded
Inside the lines.
Jimy said he'd give us chances,
But there's not a chance for me.
I pinch-hit in only four games.
And I started in only three.

How I wish I was still with the Zephyrs
Wish I'd stayed in triple-A
Nobody sits on the bench in New Orleans.
I'd be a starter there almost everyday.
Jimy said he'd give us chances,
But there's not a chance for me.
I pinch-hit in only four games.
And I started in only three.

When Jimy's resting one of the outfielders
He has Palmeiro take his place.
And in day games after night games
Vizcaino plays first base.
And when Jimy needs a pinch-hitter
He looks no further than Mike Lamb
Sometimes I just sit and wonder
If Jimy even knows who I am

Now I know what it's like
To be the fifth wheel, to get a raw deal
And be ridin' pine.

Great piece, Annie, and timely as well ... I have no earthly idea why Lane or Berkman isn't trying 1B on those days Bagwell needs a break ... And for goodness sakes! What's with Backe pinch-hitting last night and then not staying in the game as the pitcher? ... He hadn't pitched in 2 days and they have today off, yet 1m wastes a pitcher he very easily could've needed before the night was over on a PH entry :notme: I couldn't believe none of the announcers really said anything, though I completely understand Dierker not questioning the move since he's just not the type to make any bones publicly about the way Williams manages.

Geez, at least let Lane pinch-hit for Pettitte in that situation!

This I know the answer to. Backe was an infielder before he was a pitcher...up until about 3 years ago. And so he's not a bad hitter. With today being an off-day, Jimy wasn't afraid of running out of pitchers, but he was afraid of running out of pinch-hitters. I mean, you've got your Palmeiro, your Lamb, your Vizcaino and then you have to look to your bullpen for pinch-hitters. It's too bad they're carrying so many pitchers. They could really use another guy on the bench.

No kidding Annie. What baffles me is that Jimy is obviously trying a powerplay with Hidalgo to get him to play well. If you are going to threaten Hidalgo then threaten him with Lane. We know Lane can put up numbers similar to Hidalgo because he has done at every level of the minors. Palmeiro just surpassed his home run totals from the last five years already. Does anyone really believe he will be a power threat as a corner outfielder from here on out. Lane would have been perfect for that role and he should be the first guy to start when they want to rest someone.
