A.J. Burnett could be back on the mound for the Marlins next Wednesday against the Reds. All he has to do is make it through his rehab start for Triple-A Albuquerque tonight without incident and he will be given the green light. "He's now going to 90-100 pitches. We'll see how far he goes in the game and how effective his pitches are in the fifth inning," pitching coach Wayne Rosenthal told the Florida Sun-Sentinel. "Strength-wise, he's there, pitching-wise, he's there. It's a matter of building [his arm] up now." In eight innings over two rehab starts, Burnett has yet to allow an earned run and has struck out 11 batters. He underwent Tommy John surgery on April 28, 2003 after tearing ligaments in his right elbow in a game against the Cardinals on April 25.

Burnett is already stashed away on injured reserves in a lot of leagues, but on the off chance that he's a free agent in your fantasy league, go ahead and pick him up. We will throw out the mandatory caution, however: pitchers coming back from Tommy John surgery rarely—very rarely—do well in their first year back. Burnett is not nearly the same pitcher now as he will be next spring so temper your expectations for this summer. A.J. has top-of-the-rotation ace-level stuff, but we might not see it for another 10 months.
