Phillies Notes | Thome sits this one out
By Jim Salisbury
Inquirer Staff Writer
The wind was blowing out to right at Citizens Bank Park last night, but fans could only wonder what type of damage Jim Thome might have done.
The Phillies slugger, who missed five games with assorted hand injuries last week, was back on the bench after having a cortisone shot in his right index finger yesterday afternoon.
Thome broke his right middle finger in spring training. When he returned to action, he compensated for soreness in the middle finger while swinging, and that resulted in his straining a ligament in his index finger.
The injury has lingered and, with a lefty (Atlanta's Mike Hampton) on the mound last night, Thome and the Phillies thought yesterday was a good day to have an injection.
"I think it will really help," said Thome, who sounded certain that he would play this afternoon. "It's been nagging. It's been nagging and I feel like, 'Let's just get it over with and get it healed.' "
With Thome out of the lineup, super-sub Tomas Perez got the start at first base for the Phillies.
