O's send Bedard against Rays
Tampa Bay (20-32) at Baltimore (24-26), 7:35 p.m. ET
By Gary Washburn / MLB.com
After winning the first four games of a seven-game road trip, the Orioles limp back home after a three-game sweep at the hands of the Yankees. The Orioles return to Camden Yards with their confidence shaken to face a Tampa Bay club that's playing inspired baseball of late.
Manager Lou Piniella's club was among the worst in baseball until a three-game sweep of Cleveland two weeks ago that seemed to spark the Rays. They just won three of four from the Twins. They will go with right-hander Victor Zambrano, who has walked 49 batters in just 68 2/3 innings.
Left-hander Erik Bedard is beginning to get into a groove after having his first six weeks derailed by rainouts, skipped starts and shabby performances. He logged six innings last Sunday against Detroit, allowing two runs and six hits in a no-decision. He faced the Devil Rays in his season debut and labored for three innings in a no-decision.
The Orioles lead the American League with a .285 average but have been faltering with runners in scoring position. They are tied for fifth with the Yankees in runners left on base through Thursday despite playing three fewer games than league leader Seattle.
Melvin Mora continues to lead the AL in hitting with a .379 average.
