If you have nothing to use when you need to use somthing you use what you got. The Mets don't have a good bullpen it's not Howe's fault the Pen is horrible. Howe isn't throwing the damn pitch he's just hoping they are to do their damn job and get out of the inning.

OK, here goes.

According to Ed Coleman yesterday, the Mets had racked up 164 relief appearances since the season began.

Is that a lot? Perhaps. Perhaps not. Let's put it in perspective, shall we?

The number-1 team in terms of relief appearances since the season started is San Francisco, with 194.

The bottom team in terms of relief appearances since the season started is Montreal, with 134.

According to my calculations, that puts the Mets smack-dab in the middle of the pack. Their rank is 4th, but with the first-place team a full 30 appearances ahead and the last team 30 appearances behind, I'm thinking the ranking is not what's important.

For better or for worse, the game has changed, and relievers play a bigger role than they ever have. As with the whole Guerrero thing, deal with it.

Going into yesterday's game, the Mets pitching staff had the best ERA in all of baseball..

What exactly is wrong with that???

The pitching is the only thing keeping this team around in the race...

starting pitching is keeping this team afloat
the bullpen does not rank very well among MLB bullpens other than looper and moreno the pen is very shaky

Uh...... before you make a statement like that, you should do a little research. Up until yesterday, the bullpen had pitched to a 1.41 ERA in its last 42 innings. And they'd given up just five (5) earned runs in that period.

And, up until yesterday, the team was 20-2 when taking a lead into the 7th inning.

This would suggest that the bullpen is carrying the starters..... or at least working an awful lot.

As Julie aka LeiterFan says, the game has changed. I have been a Mets fan since 1962 when I was just 7 years old. When I really started getting into following baseball in 1969, pitchers like Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Gary Gentry, Jim McAndrew and Don Cardwell were all part of a 5 man rotation.
They made over 30 starts a season, and they pitched until the 7th, 8th, or 9th inning and then one of the relief pitchers would take over. They didn't even work on pitch counts back then. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/1969.shtml)

Also back in the 1960's before the players union became very strong, there would be at least 15 to 20 doubleheaders listed on the schedule. I just did a random search for the 1962 season and there were a total of 31 doubleheaders played (http://ultimatemets.com/metannual.php?ThisYear=1962).

Gary, don't you mean a 4-man rotation? The 5-man rotation didn't really get going until after 1969. In 1969, Cardwell and McAndrew only started 21 games each. Koosman, Seaver and Gentry each started more than 30.

In that season, Seaver pitched 18 complete games and Kooz pitched 16 CGs. Gentry had 6, and that's still more than entire TEAMS pitch today.

But facts don't seem to matter to Mr. Stinks. Only his perceptions do. And right now, he perceives that the pen is bad.

Whatever.

sure they have been good during that stretch you mentioned i'lll give them credit for that
but im still not happy with weathers franco or wheeler which i guess are the main problems of my discontent.
im giving credit to looper moreno and even botallico and stanton for being good for us
if duquette can somehow drop those 3 we can be even better

replace wheeler with yates, bring up feliciano to be the long man and drop franco and keep weathers for his great impersonation of tackleberry from police academy
