Rain washes out Devil Rays-Orioles game
June 5, 2004

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Jerry Hairston's debut in right field was pushed back at least a day when rain postponed Saturday's game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The game was called just over an hour before the scheduled 4:30 p.m. start. A steady shower drenched Camden Yards throughout the day and was expected to last into the evening.

Hairston was the Orioles' starting second baseman before breaking the ring finger on his right hand in the exhibition opener on March 4. Brian Roberts took over as the starter, and quickly established himself as a solid leadoff hitter and reliable fielder.

That left Hairston looking for a place to play when he left the 15-day disabled list on May 11. He has been used at second base, in left field and as a designated hitter.

And, on Saturday, Baltimore manager Lee Mazzilli penciled Hairston into the lineup in right field.

``I'm in the lineup and that's where Mazz wants me to play, so that's what I've got to do,'' Hairston said. ``I'll just go out there and do the best I can.''

Hairston has a .320 batting average, so Mazzilli intended to give B.J. Surhoff the day off and find a place for his transplanted second baseman.

``The way he's swinging, you've got to keep him in the lineup,'' the manager said.

Hairston, who spent much of last season on the disabled list with a broken foot, got off to a slow start at the plate before getting into a groove.

``The first couple games were really tough. I was just trying to get used to playing again at this level,'' he said. ``Hopefully I continue to play well.''

He would obviously prefer to play second base on a full-time basis, but that's not an option right now.

``Maz is the manager and I'm the player. You've just got to do what you're told,'' Hairston said.

Both managers pushed their starting pitchers back to Sunday. Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli will use Rodrigo Lopez, and Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella plans to start Rob Bell.

The rainout means Tampa Bay will skip Dewon Brazelton, Sunday's scheduled starter, who was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Thursday for the start.

``Our bullpen is pretty used up. I can use Brazelton in the bullpen spot,'' Piniella said.

It was the sixth rainout for the Orioles. The makeup date will probably occur as part of a day-night doubleheader when Tampa Bay returns to Baltimore on July 5-7.

``We've really gotten backed up. It's just amazing, all these rainouts,'' Mazzilli said. ``I've never seen so many rainouts.''

Friday night's game was played in a steady rain. The Devil Rays won 8-7 in 11 innings, their 11th win in 15 games.

That is pretty incredible, 6 rainouts and it's still the first third of the season. I wonder what the record for that is in a single season, number of games rained out and rescheduled?

Of course, all of this reminds me that the first time I went to Camden Yards, the game was rained out! Think I told you this, but a few buds and I make plans to see Camden in late July 2000, and when we get there Ripken's on the DL, go figure! But the Friday night game versus the Tribe was rained out in the 4th inning, really worked out well for us to be honest with you ... They ended up making it up after the regularly scheduled Saturday afternoon game ... Gave us a good reason to just go out hitting bars Friday night after the rainout, then I'd say less than 10,000 actually showed up on Saturday for the makeup game ... We ended up sitting right behind the plate with all the no-shows
