Phillies Notes | Bell is aching, will sit for a bit

By Jim Salisbury

Inquirer Staff Writer

ATLANTA - Add another name to the Phillies' growing list of players with nicks, bumps, bruises, sprains, strains and pains.

Third baseman David Bell has experienced pain in his lower-back/hip region recently. The pain is not bad enough to send Bell to the disabled list, but it is significant enough that he required a cortisone shot yesterday.

Bell did not play against the Atlanta Braves last night. He will sit again today. He would like to play tomorrow, but manager Larry Bowa indicated that it's more likely Bell won't return to the lineup until Tuesday night in Chicago.

"It's been a struggle the last couple of days," Bell said. "I could still play, but I think this is the right move now. Get it taken care of."

Bell said he has experienced discomfort in the area for several weeks, but it intensified in recent days. He said he had a cortisone shot in late April.

Hearing that Bell is feeling pain in his hip and back region probably sets off alarms for Phillies fans. He missed about half of last season with a stress fracture in his lower spine, and the injury caused pain in his hip region.

Bell said he has been told by medical personnel that this injury is not related to last year's. He pointed to a spot on the lower-left portion of his back, about belt high, and said he had suffered a strained muscle in the area.

The injury has bothered Bell when he swings and runs.

Bell, hitting .287 with six home runs and 24 RBIs, had played in 50 of the Phils' 52 games before last night. He was replaced in the lineup by Tomas Perez.

Good news. The Phils, who have been beset by injuries lately, did get some good news on the medical front. Closer Billy Wagner, who has missed 28 games with a groin injury, felt so good throwing off a mound yesterday that his target date for returning from the DL has been moved up to Tuesday.

Wagner wants to face live hitters once, and he will do that tomorrow when he pitches an inning for double-A Reading at Bowie, Md.

Second baseman Placido Polanco is also expected off the DL on Tuesday. Pitcher Vicente Padilla (biceps tendinitis) is the other key Phillie on the disabled list. He can't return until June 14.

Josh Hancock took Padilla's spot in the rotation Thursday night. Hancock gave up six runs in two innings. He will not start when Padilla's spot comes up again Wednesday. Eric Milton, last night's starter, will make that start on regular rest, but the Phils will have to plug a hole in the rotation next Saturday.
