St. Louis native joins Cardinals broadcast team
By Patrick Mulrenin MLB.com
ST. LOUIS -- Joel Meyers had better get used to Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck's phrase, "That's a winner."
The Cardinals and KMOX-AM 1120, the team's radio flagship, announced Wednesday that Meyers will join the broadcast team of Buck and former Cardinal Mike Shannon for the 2002 season.
Buck, 77, has spent most of the offseason in the hospital following surgery for lung cancer and intestinal blockage. He also has a staph infection, which is related to the cancer surgery. He will continue to broadcast home games for the Cardinals this season, but he will rarely travel as has been the case over the last couple of seasons.
Meyers, 47, will work primarily with Shannon on the road and will handle various other assignments on behalf of the Cardinals and KMOX during the season.
"What a thrill this is," Meyers said. "Having an opportunity to work with Jack Buck and Mike Shannon -- people that I have looked up to for a long time -- is really special. I have great memories about the Cardinals and my days living in St. Louis and one of my fondest is the 1982 World Championship season."
When Whitey Herzog's team captured the last championship crown for St. Louis, Meyers was 27-years-old and the public address announcer at Busch Stadium. He bellowed the names of Cardinals players during the 1981 and 1982 seasons. His roots are in the St. Louis area, for he attended Ladue High School and the University of Missouri.
Meyers is currently the basketball play-by-play voice of the San Antonio Spurs for Fox Sports Net. He also works on Fox for Major League Baseball, Big 12 Conference football and the PGA Golf Tour.
Over his career, Meyers has covered college and Olympic basketball, baseball, football, tennis for ESPN, NBC and CBS Radio/Westwood One.
Meyers replaces Joe Buck, Jack's son, who will focus on local and national television broadcasts with Fox.
The addition of Meyers is the second Cardinals broadcasting move made within a month. In January, Dan McLaughlin decided to stay with Fox Sports Net. In addition to working all Fox road games, McLaughlin will have broadcasting duties as the play-by-play announcer for home games that air on KPLR (Channel 11). Fox owns all of the television rights for the Cardinals.
Bob Carpenter held the play-by-play position for home games with KPLR last season. Despite eight seasons as a Cardinals broadcaster, Carpenter will not be returning to the booth for St. Louis this season.
