It's started.....

I stopped by the local news stand yesterday and observed that the annual role out of fantasy football magazines has started. There were half a dozen mags on the shelf, some of them the mainstream issues, Pro Football Weekly, Sporting News, and some of them you probably never had heard of. More will be coming out every day, with training camps opening in July.

Now, there are several kinds of fantasy players out there.

The ones who pick up one magazine and show up at the auction/draft and pick their team based on the cheat sheets in that mag.

Then there are the owners who pick up a magazine and actually read it, then suppliment their knowledge with timely internet information, and modify their lists so they are up to date.

Lastly, the more hardcore players, who can't get enough information. They will buy several of the magazines, use internet resources often, check the paper every morning, and will take the time to customize their lists to fit the league format they are playing in.

There is nothing wrong with being in any of the above categories. Who cares if you don't want to spend hours and hours getting ready for your auction/draft? The main objective is to have fun!

The information available to the average fantasy football owner these days is so much better than it was even ten years ago, that even if you buy one magazine, and keep up with the sports section, you can have fun and be competative playing the game. (It certainly won't hurt if you stop by here and see what's cooking either :wave1: )

Just a word to the wise, check out the magazines before you buy. Make sure that they are grading out players in the format that you will be using. If you are in a perforamance league, it won't do you any good to pick up a mag where they rate the players for basic leagues. Or for that matter, if you are in an auction league, it won't help you to use a resource that is focused on drafts.

In no particular order, here are some of the magazines you can expect to see on the racks. I won't get them all, so please add any I miss and, if you look it over, share your thoughts. (Before you choose a mag, see if it has a website you can check for updates)

I subscribe to Fantasy Sports & Sports Weekly for my mags. I belong to a premium ff internet service and frequently visit the free info sites for my fantasy fix. I realize the mags are old news by the time they hit my doorstep but they make excellent bathroom reading and you can always find a mag in my lunch pale for reading on the commuter train.
I am currently bidding on Fantasy Football Weekly 2004 Anual guide at fanball.

Thanks for the input!

I agree the mags aren't very up to date, but for football fans they are the first sign that training camp isn't far away. (Scary thought?) I keep one in my briefcase so I have something to read and kill time whenever needed.

I haven't made the jump to a premium site yet. There is still so much available for free that I haven't felt the need. Do you feel like you're getting info that you wouldn't have access to otherwise?

Yes, I belong to Fantasy Asylum. Its the cheapest $14.95 and also one of the best. The info is comparable to free sites like rototimes with the stuff from the AP. They have tools to help in drafting, IDPs, setting linups with weekly consensus cheat sheets. Every sunday morning they have a live chat with the staff writers with up to kickoff info. There is too much info for me to soak it all in. Last year I won 3rd place at their playoff challenge (377 entries). I won DVD boxsets of Super Bowls 1 thru 10 and a Dallas Cowboys dvd.
I will always buy the mags though.

Good for you! That's a great finish. Decent prizes, too.

I've played in Yahoo and Smallworld public leagues before, but thats about it for web based leagues.

Sounds like you get some good info from Fantasy Asylum, and the price is reasonable. Thanks for the feedback.

That's an interesting way to do it. How much do you save after shipping?

They shipped it for free. It didn't cost me nothing but 41000 fanball points (that was the winning bid). You get points for playing games and posting in the forum.

The Fantasy Football Guide 2004, Professional Edition is out. Bob Lung contributes several articles, as well as RB write ups. I am in the mag as one of the contributors to the Mock Auction, Page 148.

Check it out and let me know what you think
