The Arizona Diamondbacks try to put the brakes on a seven- game losing streak this evening when they play the middle contest of their three-game interleague set against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.
In the opener of the set on Friday, Jason Johnson allowed just one hit in eight superb innings, as the Tigers edged Arizona, 2-1.
The only man to get on base against Johnson (5-7) was Luis Gonzalez, who scored after a triple and also walked.
Brandon Webb (3-8) also pitched very well in going the distance for Arizona, but suffered another tough-luck defeat. He yielded two runs on just four hits and a pair of walks. Webb has allowed two earned runs or less in his last five starts, but has only one win over that time.
The Diamondbacks are now a season-high 19 games under .500.
Arizona will pin its hopes tonight on lefthander Casey Fossum. who has lost his last two starts and is just 1-6 on the year to go along with a 6.08 ERA. His latest setback came on Monday against the San Diego Padres, as he gave up two runs and six hits in six innings in a 3-1 loss.
Fossum is 1-0 lifetime against the Tigers with a 4.76 ERA in four games, one of which was a start.
The Diamondbacks are 14-24 on the road this year.
These teams have met the last three seasons with the Diamondbacks owning a 7-3 advantage in this series, including a three-game sweep in Detroit last season.
Arizona is 52-52 all-time in interleague action.
