Cleveland Indians lefthander C.C. Sabathia will see two more specialists for his ailing left shoulder that forced him to leave Saturday's game versus Colorado.
Sabathia was removed from his start after one inning in Saturday's 4-3 victory over the Rockies due to irritation in his throwing shoulder. He needed to make just eight pitches to retire the side in order during the first inning, then walked off the mound grabbing his left shoulder and moving his arm in circles.
According to team trainer Lonnie Soloff, Sabathia will see team physician Dr. Mark Schickendantz on Sunday afternoon and then head to Birmingham, Alabama on Monday for an examination by noted sports surgeon James Andrews.
"We just want (the doctors) to confirm our thought process," Soloff said. "We want to ensure our approach is appropriate."
Soloff also added that the MRI taken Saturday night on Sabathia's shoulder was consistent with the MRI he had in late April.
Sabathia was also scratched from an April 22nd start against Kansas City after experiencing tightness in his left shoulder during warmups. He was diagnosed with an irritated left biceps tendon and did not pitch again until May 1.
He is 5-3 with a 2.77 earned run average in 15 starts for the Indians this season. The 23-year old entered Saturday third in the American League in ERA.
"With an athlete as strong as C.C., he's at a greater risk if his arm gets out of place," Soloff added. "If his arm gets behind him, he's not where he needs to be mechanically."
