15-day DL. Sounds like it's going to be longer, though.

He's got an owie in his hip. :( Bummer. Apparently, while he had the herniated disc in his lower back, he was overcompensating and tore his hip flexor.

This sucks. I hope Chad Mottola can continue hitting like he was in Ottawa. He's been brought up to take Gibby's place on the roster. But with BJ Surhoff coming back, they could alternate in the outfield. And then there's David Newhan. When Melvin comes back, he could be in the outfield.

David Newhan rocks. I'd like to see him in the outfield, yes I would.

Melvin's eager to come back. He ran the bases at full speed yesterday and said he feels fine. He's a gamer though. He wants to play. Maz is being more cautious.

Gibbons to miss 4 to 6 weeks with torn hip muscle
Struggling since leaving DL, outfielder returns to it; Mora says 'I want to play'

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Orioles placed right fielder Jay Gibbons back on the 15-day disabled list yesterday, after a magnetic resonance imaging exam showed a tear in his left hip flexor muscle.

Gibbons said he could miss the next four to six weeks.

"To say the least, it's disappointing," he said.

Gibbons was on the disabled list for 17 days, starting in late May, with a herniated disc in his lower back, and the flexor muscle started bothering him at about that same time.

He hit .133 (6-for-45) in 14 games after coming off the DL. The power Gibbons normally generates off his back leg in the batter's box simply wasn't there.

After hitting .277 last year, his average sunk to .223.

"I just couldn't swing," he said. "I don't think I've hit a ball hard since I've been back off the DL. I knew there was something."

Chad Mottola, who was batting .270 in 64 games for Triple-A Ottawa, was promoted to take Gibbons' place on the active roster. Mottola is a .200 career major league hitter, after brief stints with the Cincinnati Reds, Toronto Blue Jays and Florida Marlins spanning 43 games.

The Orioles added Mottola to their 40-man roster, and transferred Marty Cordova to the 60-day disabled list.

B.J. Surhoff, who has started 17 games in right field this season, has been on the DL with a strained left calf, but he's eligible to return Sunday.

Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli said the plan is to give Gibbons two weeks of solid rest and see how the hip flexor feels.

"He's been playing in pain," Mazzilli said. "I told him, 'I admire what you're trying to do, but you're not helping the team right now.'"

Mora says he's ready

Mazzilli and the training staff paid close attention to Melvin Mora during batting practice yesterday, as Mora tried to return to the lineup for the first time in four days.

Mora ran the bases at full speed before taking ground balls and hitting balls from the batting cage.

"I felt ready [Monday]," Mora said. "I'm not 100 percent, but I'm 90 percent. I don't think I'm going to be 100 percent until next month, but I want to go out there, I want to play. Most people here are not 100 percent, and they play."

Mazzilli said Mora was available to pinch hit last night, but David Newhan got another start at third base. Newhan extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a run-scoring double in the third inning to give him 11 RBIs. He also doubled in the eighth to raise his average to .486 (18-for-37).

"We'll find a spot" for Newhan when Mora returns, Mazzilli said. And with Gibbons hurt, that spot could be right field.

Military discount

The Orioles are offering an Independence Day discount to all military personnel and their families for Monday's day-night doubleheader against Tampa Bay. Military personnel can purchase tickets for $5, and their family members 14-and-under will be admitted for $1 each.

The games will be played at 1:35 p.m., and 7:05 p.m. For more information, call 1-888-848-2473.

Around the horn

Veteran reliever Jason Grimsley and rookie outfielder Tim Raines swapped numbers, so Grimsley is now wearing No. 38, and Raines No. 16. Grimsley has worn No. 38 for seven years. ... Reliever Rick Bauer, who is on the DL with nerve irritation in his right elbow, will begin a rehabilitation assignment for Double-A Bowie today.
