JULY 9 IN BASEBALL HISTORY

» 2000: Houston’s Jose Lima ends his 13-game losing streak and the Astros beat the Royals, 9-6.
» 1988: Chris Speier hits for the cycle and Ernest Riles hits the 10,000th home run in Giants history to lead San Francisco to a 21-2 rout of the Cardinals. The 21 runs are a San Francisco record.

» 1977: Rafael Garcia of Juarez (Mexican League) hurls his 2nd no-hitter of the season in beating Durango 3-1. He throttled Nuevo Laredo without a hit on April 16th.

» 1965: Senators LF Frank Howard ties a major-league record with seven strikeouts in Washington's twin-bill split with the Red Sox.

» 1955: Chicago newspaperman Arch Ward, the originator of the All-Star Game, dies at age 58 as he is leaving to cover his 22nd midseason classic.

» 1939: The Red Sox win 4-3 and 5*3 to sweep a 5-game series in Yankee Stadium. The Yankee lead is now 6 1/2 games. Joe Cronin drives in runs in both games, giving him 12 games in a row with RBI.

» 1929: Cardinals OF Chick Hafey, with eight straight hits in his two previous games, gets two more before the Phils' "Fidgety Phil" Collins stops him. His 10-for-10 ties the NL record. The Cards win 7-4.

» 1914: Austin of the Texas League loses its 27th straight.

» 1899: Judge Dunn of Chicago orders city officials to stop interfering with Andrew Brennan, who put seats on the roof of his house near the park and sells tickets to people.

» 1888: With slugger Sam Thompson already sidelined with a sore arm, Detroit suffers another crippling injury when Hardie Richardson breaks his ankle and is lost for the season.
