WHOA!!!

I love this, actually. We really needed another left-handed bat. We needed somebody solid in right field..... Gibby being injury-prone...... and we needed to get rid of DeJean.

However, as a Mets fan, I'm slightly disturbed by DeJean coming to NYC. Wow. He may have thought life in Baltimore was tough with the boos. Wait'll he has runners scoring on him at Shea! I'm afraid for him!

Well...... a breath of fresh air on the O's side. :D

Looks like he wanted to stay in New York, though.

Orioles acquire Garcia for DeJean

By Gary Washburn / MLB.com

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles continued retooling their club and ridding themselves of disappointing players on Monday by trading veteran reliever Mike DeJean to the New York Mets for outfielder/designated hitter Karim Garcia.

DeJean, signed to be the team's setup man and primary right-handed reliever, never panned out in that role and was reduced to a mop-up roles after the Orioles acquired Jason Grimsley. DeJean was 0-5 with a 6.13 ERA in 37 relief appearances for the Orioles this season.

DeJean gave up a crushing two-run triple on Sunday to Carl Crawford, the first batter he faced, in a 7-2 loss to Tampa Bay. DeJean never adjusted to pitching at Camden Yards, compiling a 9.90 ERA at home compared with 2.29 on the road. And he also allowed left-handed batters a .387 average.

The Orioles signed him as a free agent in December.

It will be Garcia's second stint with the Orioles. He played eight games in 2000 before being released after the season. Garcia, who hit .234 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs in 62 games for the Mets, will give the Orioles a dependable hitter off the bench and a spot starter in the outfield.

"I think this is good for me, though I wish I could stay here [in New York]," Garcia told MLB.com. "We have a pretty good team and a great bunch of guys. There's great chemistry, and we're fighting for first place. But that's the unfortunate part of baseball.

Garcia should give the Orioles some much-needed power. He hit 16 homers in 197 at-bats for Cleveland in 2002 and 11 homers in 76 games for the Indians and Yankees last season.

Garcia was made expendable when the Mets acquired Richard Hidalgo from Houston last month and had just three at-bats after being activated from the disabled list on July 9 with left wrist tendinitis. Garcia knows Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli from their time together with the Yankees last season.

"If I never got hurt and did what I was supposed to do, it could be a different situation [here]," he said. "But the injury didn't help me, and Richard has been doing a great job. He's the reason why we're still in contention. But I talked to Mazzilli today, and he told me I'd be playing right field tomorrow. He said I'll be playing against righties, and if I get hot, who knows?"

The Orioles will now have a position crunch with David Newhan, Jerry Hairston and Garcia looking for playing time in two spots. Garcia is a natural right fielder but Hairston is an improving fielder and made some sparkling plays recently.

I know him particularly well because he used to suck, er, i mean, play for Az. He was involved in that trade that brought us gonzo, and although other people dont think hes that bad, i think he sucks. good riddance, Garcia!

I actually have no problem with Garcia. When he gets alot of playing time, he's fine. I remember at the start of the season, he was being played alot..... he and Shane Spencer were getting hits all over the place.

The only problem we have is another log-jam at a position. :sigh:

At this point, all I can think is...... whatever..... if changes can bring this team up, fine, if they can't...... oh well. :hmm:
