» 1990: In his first major-league start, Baltimore’s Big Ben McDonald shuts out Chicago 2-0. McDonald was the first pick in the 1989 June draft. It is the first shut out in a AL debut in 15 years.
» 1978: The Indians Mike Paxton strikes out four batters in the fifth inning of an 11-0 win over the Mariners.
» 1966: Minnesota P Jim Merritt beats the Senators 1-0 and ties an AL mark with seven straight strikeouts.
» 1956: Junior Gilliam of the Brooklyn Dodgers makes 12 assists at 2B to set a modern major-league record. Dodger captain Pee Wee Reese gets his 2,000th major-league hit, one of five active major leaguers to reach the mark. But St. Louis wins 13-6.
» 1946: Lew Flick of Little Rock (Southern Association) gets nine straight hits in a 19-inning game. Flick gets 3 more hits in the 2nd game of the doubleheader.
» 1936: Cardinals slugger Joe Medwick has 10 hits in succession to equal the NL record. He had seven hits in his last seven times at bat in a doubleheader on the 19th, and he hit safely in his first three today before being stopped by the Giants Carl Hubbell.
» 1922: The Cubs edge Brooklyn 1–0 as Grover Cleveland Alexander wins the duel with Dutch Ruether. Ray Grimes, who drove in three runs yesterday, doubles in the only Cub tally. Grimes now has RBIs in 15 straight games.
» 1908: NY Giant Mike Donlin is baseball's most popular player, according to a Chicago newspaper contest. He tops Honus Wagner by a wide margin and will be awarded a trophy cup.
