» 2000: The Astros defeat the Cardinals, 15-7, hitting a record-tying four HRs off Andy Benes in the second inning, and six homers all told. Benes is the 17th pitcher to surrender four homers in a single frame, and the second his year.

» 1987: The Red Sox waive Bill Buckner, the goat of last season's World Series loss to the Mets, and promote slugger Sam Horn from Pawtucket .

» 1976: The Angels fire manager Dick Williams. Norm Sherry takes over the reins.

» 1966: Bob Allison of the Twins suffers a broken left hand when hit by a Jim Lonborg pitch during Minnesota's 10-4 win over the Red Sox.

» 1956: Joe Cronin and Hank Greenberg are officially inducted into the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, NY.

» 1944: After hitting four consecutive HRs in two games, Bill Nicholson of the Chicago Cubs is walked intentionally with the bases loaded in the seventh inning of the second game against the New York Giants. The Cubs rally to tie, but the Giants win 12-10. Nicholson has hit six HRs within 48 hours (one on Friday night, one on Saturday, and the 4 today).

» 1932: Cleveland P Wes Ferrell makes 10 assists in a 12-inning game, but loses to the White Sox 6-5. The record in both leagues is 12.

» 1922: When umpires Brick Owens and Tom Connolly miss a train, the Detroit and St. Louis trainers, Bits Bierhalter and Howley, are pressed into service.

» 1912: Iron Man McGinnity is still pitching doubleheaders, winning a pair of games for Newark against Rochester (International League) at age 41.

» 1896: Cy Young pitches no-hit ball for 82Ž3 innings before surrendering a hit to Ed Delahanty in a 2-0 win over Philadelphia. The win is Cleveland's 6th straight and leaves them one game out of first place.
