TORONTO (CP) - Veteran Blue Jays starter Pat Hentgen is retiring.

The 35-year-old right-hander told his teammates Saturday in a pre-game meeting that he thought it was time to call it quits.

Hentgen has been hit hard this season and is 2-9 with a 6.95 ERA.

Hentgen returned to the Blue Jays this off-season amid high hopes, but age and arm problems have caught up with the classy veteran, bringing an end to a career that included a Cy Young Award.

Well it sucks that it had to end this way. I thought he would come back and have a good season, and now this. Good luck in post-baseball Pat!!

I wouldnt be surprised if he was offered a position in the organization
