NL | 299 for Maddux; Phils are next foe

Associated Press

MILWAUKEE - Greg Maddux moved within one win of No. 300, and Sammy Sosa homered and doubled in a run in the Chicago Cubs' 7-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night.

Maddux will try to become the 22d pitcher in major-league history to win 300 games when he faces the Phillies at Wrigley Field on Sunday. He would be the first National Leaguer to accomplish the feat since the Phillies' Steve Carlton on Sept. 23, 1983.

Maddux (10-7) gave up one earned run and four hits in a crisp, 79-pitch outing that lasted six innings. He walked one and struck out six in winning his third straight.

Russell Branyan sent Maddux's only mistake 480 feet for a solo homer in the sixth.

Pirates 8, Braves 4

PITTSBURGH - Rob Mackowiak came around to score on a bizarre, bases-loaded double when Atlanta catcher Johnny Estrada made two errors in a span of seconds, and Pittsburgh rallied with a five-run seventh inning to beat the Braves.

J.D. Drew's 22-game hitting streak ended as he went 0 for 3.

Cardinals 6, Reds 0

CINCINNATI - St. Louis righthander Jason Marquis hit a two-run double and pitched seven shutout innings against Cincinnati for his eighth straight victory.

Reggie Sanders and Jim Edmonds each hit a solo homer to back Marquis (11-4), one of three Cardinals pitchers with double-digit wins. Edmonds leads the NL with 11 homers in July.

Astros 10, Diamondbacks 3

HOUSTON - Adam Everett hit two of Houston's season-high four homers and Roy Oswalt pitched seven innings of two-hit ball to lead the Astros over Arizona.

Arizona lost again after snapping a 14-game losing streak the night before.

Jeff Bagwell hit a three-run homer and Jeff Kent had a two-run shot.

Mets 4, Expos 2

MONTREAL - Tom Glavine (8-8) got his first win since June 13, Mike Cameron hit a three-run homer and New York ended a four-game skid with a victory over Montreal.

Rockies 7, Dodgers 2

DENVER - Aaron Cook pitched into the eighth inning for his first home win in a year, and Jeromy Burnitz homered for the fifth straight home game and drove in four runs to help Colorado beat Los Angeles.
