Former Phillies pitcher Ruben Gomez, 77, died Monday in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1958, he was traded from the San Francisco Giants along with Valmy Thomas to the Phillies for Jack Sanford.

He split the 1962 season with Cleveland and Minnesota and made a brief comeback five years later with the Phillies.

The righthander was 76-86 with a 4.09 ERA for the Giants, Phillies, Cleveland and Minnesota. He pitched from 1953 to '62, and then returned to make seven relief appearances for the Phillies in 1967, when he was the oldest player in the majors at 39.

Mr. Gomez also was the first pitcher from Puerto Rico to win a World Series game, combining with Hoyt Wilhelm to lead the New York Giants over the Cleveland Indians, 6-2, in Game 3 in 1954. The Giants went on to sweep the Indians.

Mr. Gomez had his best season in 1954, going 17-9 with a 2.88 ERA. He also won 13 games as a rookie in 1953.
